Kardashians' odd link to John Lewis 2023 Christmas advert and explosive row
No one could have predicted that a beloved yearly British festive tradition and USA's most famous reality TV family could possibly have anything in common. And yet, 2023 seems to have made that possible with John Lewis' much-anticipated Christmas advert.
Not because of its choice of Snapper, the Venus flytrap and wannabe Christmas tree - nor due to the theme of growing and expanding festive traditions. It is the choice of using operatic legend Andrea Bocelli that has this year managed to link the two together in a very unusual way.
Kardashian fans will know that Andrea was at the centre of sisters Kourtney and Kim's epic row after both had opted to have the legend sing at their weddings. The pair became embroiled in a huge falling out after Kourtney accused Kim of using her wedding to Travis Barker as a "business opportunity". In response, during a confessional on their Hulu TV show, Kim shared her side of the story, explaining that Kourtney had in fact copied her wedding to Kanye West back in 2014.
"I got married in Italy. Am I saying you copied me by getting married in Italy? Who performed at my wedding? Andrea Bocelli. Who performed at Kourtney's wedding? Andrea Bocelli," Kim said, laying out the facts. "You stole my f**king wedding country and my wedding performer! Andrea Bocelli is my favourite male singer of all time."
During the summer, Andrea responded to the drama as he took to his Instagram and wrote: "Dear @kimkardashian and @kourtneykardash. I'm so flattered that you both love my voice and I'll always be happy to sing for you. But know that there's a younger and far more helpful artist @matteobocelli who your mother @krisjenner also knows very well...," he continued, referring to his son and performer Mateo Bocelli. "See you soon in Tuscany!"
Kim Kardashian weighs in on sister feud after Kourtney's sad 'outsider' claimsWorld-renowned opera legend Andrea Bocelli performs song 'Festa', meaning 'celebration', in this year's John Lewis ad, which is written and produced by Le Feste Antonacci. The song will be released in a longr form as a charity single, with a portion of the proceeds from the sale going towards John Lewis Partnership’s Building Happier Futures charities, which help care experienced young people and families in need.
“I am delighted to take part in this wonderful and unique tradition of Christmas storytelling," Andrea Bocelli said. "It is very special for me given the great support this will bring to both the John Lewis and Andrea Bocelli foundations. Joy to all of your worlds this Christmas!"
The lyrics are very simple, with the focus on the melody and sound rather than words. 'La vita e una festa' is repeated throughout, meaning 'life is a celebration'. Opening about the choice of song, Saatchi & Saatchi Managing Director Sarah Jenkins tells the Mirror: "We didn't need a lyric to carry it so much, actually what the directors had was the brilliant idea of putting an Italian track on it so that the lyric was more of an instrument, so that the voice was an instrument and it was a way to bring joy and bring surprise to it. They had this track by a band they knew and we rewrote and re-recorded it and then called up Bocelli and asked if he would like to get involved and we were lucky enough for him to say yes!"
