Iconic BBC stand-up show making return to screens to celebrate 20th anniversary

Fan-favourite BBC show, Live at the Apollo, is making a return to screens next year as it celebrates 20 years since the show first launched.

BBC Two announced the commissioning of the special celebratory series as well as another brand-new series for 2025. Both series will have six episodes and a Christmas special and will be filmed at London's very own Hammersmith Apollo, which can fit up to 3,500 guests.

"We are very proud that we will be making two more series of Live at the Apollo, which provides a platform for fresh and experienced comedians to showcase themselves. The show has consistently delivered the finest comedy talents to our viewers, and we are excited to keep bringing fresh and hilarious stand-up acts for all to enjoy," Kalpna Patel-Knight, Head of Entertainment at the BBC, said.

Live at the Apollo is known for its iconic stand-up from both well-known and up-and-coming comedians. Over the years, the likes of Michael McIntyre, Mo Gilligan, Katherine Ryan and more performed at the venue. Others include John Bishop, Lee Mack, Sean Lock and Frankie Boyle.

The show has been on air since 2004 and its previous series had Catherine Bohart, Babatunde Aléshé, Judi Love and Alfie Brown in episodes aired between the end of 2022 and the beginning of this year. Andrew Beint, MD of Open Mike Productions said of the new series: "Open Mike are thrilled that Live At The Apollo will air for two more series on the BBC in 2024 and 2025.

"We will continue to introduce viewers to some of the funniest homegrown and international stand-up comedic talents currently working in today's comedy industry, and cannot wait to have the future comedy superstars of tomorrow perform in front of the famous Live At the Apollo lights."

The series was previously called Jack Dee Live at the Apollo when Jack hosted the first two series and the opening show of the third series. The programme was renamed for its third series which was filmed over three evenings in 2007. All episodes were on BBC One until 2015 when it moved to BBC Two.

Besides Jack, Dara Ó Briain, Jason Manford, Rich Hall, Sean Lock and Sarah Millican made the most appearances on the popular show. Meanwhile, this year's series was filmed earlier this year. Hosts included Emmanuel Sonubi, Maisie Adam, Nabil Abdulrashid, Tom Allen, Stephen Bailey, Ria Lina and Lou Sanders.

Troy Hawke, Olga Koch, Michael Odewale, Susie McCabe, Jake Lambert, Rachel Fairburn, Celya AB, Neil Delamere and more brought the laughs. Comedians Lara Ricote, Glenn Moore, Thanyia Moore, Lloyd Griffith, Josh Pugh and Lucy Beaumont were the remaining incredible acts.
