Ally McCoist and Piers Morgan clash on air over controversial Arsenal decision
Ally McCoist clashed with Piers Morgan live on air as the duo disagreed over the controversial decision to award Newcastle's winning goal against Arsenal.
Anthony Gordon struck just after the hour mark to hand the Magpies all three points, but the Gunners were left fuming that it was given. VAR Andy Madley extensively checked the goal before confirming referee Stuart Attwell could award it.
But visiting boss Mikel Arteta was left furious, launching an angry rant against the VAR system after the game. The club then released an explosive statement backing their manager on Sunday morning, with Morgan also putting himself firmly in Arteta's camp.
"I like Arteta's passion. I remember Alex Ferguson blowing up. I've got to say, I could probably have done without the Arsenal club statement endorsing it, which seems over the top to me. But I thought Arteta's passionate reaction was completely understandable," he told talkSPORT.
"I hate VAR with a rare enthusiasm, I think it is one of the worst things I've ever seen in sport because it's sucked all the joy out of watching football. Every single great goal now to see if it's counted or not and then someone's nostril might mean it doesn't.

"And in this case, has there ever been a situation where three different times VAR should have said 'this is not a goal'. Probably four if you include the handball that we later established probably happened.

McCoist then jumped in to disagree with Morgan, sparking a back and forth between the two of them. The Scottish legend insisted that there were no "clear and obvious" errors made by the on-field refereeing team to rule the goal out, much to Morgan's fury.
"Piers I'm going to say to you, I agree with your verdict on VAR, it's driving me crazy. However, I think the key words are clear and obvious. I don't think any of them, and I genuinely believe this, are clear and obvious. If you put me in a corner...," McCoist said before being interrupted.
Morgan hit back by saying: "You do not believe that, you do not believe that." That caused McCoist to concede: "I think it was a foul, I think it was a shove."
Morgan replied: "So immediately you disagree with yourself? Clearly it was a foul, everybody knows it was a foul. Clearly from the still photographs we've seen, the ball is about 16 feet out of play. Clearly he's offside.
"But apparently VAR doesn't have the technology to tell us whether a ball has gone out or whether there's been a blatant foul or whether there's been a clear offside or whether there's a clear handball. To which my answer would be: What's the point of VAR? It sucks the joy out of us and can't make four decisions on one incident."
