Antiques Roadshow left one guest gobsmacked at the impressive value of a piece of Hollywood history he bought at a car boot sale for just £5.

Taking place at Wollaton Hall in Nottingham, this Sunday evening's instalment saw someone bring in a musical score for expert valuation. Discovered in a "scruffy folder" at a boot sale were hand-written notes by US film composer Bernard Herrmann.

Famous for his work in Hollywood, Bernard is credited in famous flicks including Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1960) and Orson Welles' Citizen Kane (1941). ''There was a man in front of me and it was offered off for £5 but he didn't want it so I gladly took it," Sunday's guest revealed, admitting how he obtained Herrmann's personally-penned notes.

"I had a quick look through but for what was in the box, and it certainly looked like it was worthwhile for £5." Expert Justin Croft explained the bargain discovery was "Bernard's own copy" for 1952 drama The Snows of Kilimanjaro, starring Hollywood's Gregory Peck.

"What I like about it is there is a lot of annotation and that takes us closer to matching the score with the film," he told the guest before valuing the piece. "I think it does have some value. It may not be his most important film score, it's not the one which everyone knows him for. For you to have an original version of it with his corrections and with his annotation done at the time of fitting it with the film together, I think that is important."

He told the shocked guest the item could fetch up to £1,000 at auction as the lucky car booter' quipped: "Not bad for £5." It comes after another Antiques Roadshow guest was left stunned when their family heirlooms were given a huge value.

Expert Lars Tharp was on hand to give his verdict on the three items of jade brought in by one viewer. There was a bracelet made of jade and a kidney-shaped piece, as well as a stunning intricate set of jade lovebirds.

Speaking on the show, he said: "Now this is slightly different, the colour scheme here, this black brown band. This was very, very popular. A kind of jade very popular in the Ming Dynasty. I cannot guarantee that this is Ming Dynasty.

"It's very difficult to date jade because after all, all you have to do is to find a piece of this very popular jade and then carve it to make it look like that. But having said that, if you look at the detail of the very flat carving here, these are all very archaic scholarly motifs."

It was then time for Lars to give his verdict on the value of the three items. "I think the pebble bird sits so beautifully is probably between five and eight thousand. The bangle probably about the same," he said before attention turned to the most intricate piece.

He shared: "This piece would appeal to a lot of modern collectors. I would say that's probably in the region of 20 to 40,000 pounds." The guest was stunned by the valuation, as the audience gasped around them. The couple said: "What? Wow. It is our favourite so it's not for sale. Thank you very much. My dad will be very pleased."
