This is the cute moment a baby sucks on Prince William's finger as he lands in Singapore for the Earthshot Prize ceremony.

The Prince of Wales received a warm welcome and expressed his delight at being back in the city-state, amidst the backdrop of the world's largest indoor waterfall. William landed at Jewel, a nature-themed complex at Changi Airport, on Sunday at 5.30pm local time (9.30am GMT) after a 13-hour commercial flight from the UK.

Dressed in a dark navy suit, William was greeted with cheers from hundreds of locals as he appeared on a balcony with Sim Ann, Singapore's senior minister of state for foreign affairs and senior minister of state for national development, at the HSBC Rain Vortex. William then mingled with Singaporeans during a walkabout at the Shiseido Forest Valley, an indoor garden located in Jewel. He accepted gifts, shook hands, and even posed for selfies.

In a sweet moment, the prince allowed an eight-month-old baby to suck on his finger. The baby, Albane Costa, was travelling with her family from New Caledonia to France via Singapore to visit her grandparents.

Amna Yaacob, who was among the crowd waiting for William, said: "I'm so excited and shocked, I had no idea Prince William was coming." She added: "This is the one chance I will get in my life, it's a dream."

The prince praised Singapore, saying its "bold vision to be a leader for environmental innovation sets the standard for others to follow". He also expressed his gratitude: "I am grateful to the Singaporean people for hosting us this week." He encouraged everyone to take inspiration from Singapore as we celebrate the Earthshot Prize finalists this year.

A Tembusu tree was planted to mark the visit, chosen because it is a well-known native plant in Singapore and even features on its five-dollar note. This tree planting is a nod to the late Queen who planted a Tembusu sapling at Jurong Hill during her 1972 visit. This is the first time a foreign or local bigwig has ever planted a tree at Changi Jewel.

James Fong, the boss of Jewel, showed the prince the tree. The awards, aimed at recognising planet-saving solutions, will award five winners with £1 million each to grow their green ideas.

Robert Irwin, son of the late Aussie wildlife hero Steve Irwin, will join stars like Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, producer Donnie Yen and actors Lana Condor and Nomzamo Mbatha to announce the winners on Tuesday. Hannah Waddingham, who hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool earlier this year, and Emmy-winning actor and producer Sterling K Brown will host the event.

Performers such as Bebe Rexha, Bastille and OneRepublic will be gracing the stage, with Earthshot Prize Council member Sir David Attenborough making a special video appearance. Prince William first launched his Earthshot Prize awards at London's Alexandra Palace in 2021, with Boston playing host last year.

Among the finalists are Enso, a UK-based firm that has developed an efficient electric vehicle tyre that sheds fewer particles, and Sea Forest from Australia, which has created a seaweed-based feed to reduce methane emissions from cattle and sheep.

During his four-day visit to Singapore, Prince William will participate in Earthshot Week, a series of events connecting businesses, investors, past winners and current finalists to speed up their solutions. The prince will try his hand at dragon boating, meet locals to learn about their efforts to protect the planet, while the 15 finalists will join a "fellowship" retreat for networking opportunities.

Prince William will also attend a United for Wildlife summit, aimed at combating the illegal trade in animal parts. This marks Prince William's first trip to Singapore since 2012 when he toured South East Asia and the South Pacific with the then-duchess of Cambridge.
