Man Utd's best XI since Fergie according to AI as £300m worth of talent snubbed

Manchester United have failed to challenge for the Premier League let alone win it since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club.

One of his final acts as manager before departing in 2013 was to hoist the trophy aloft after leading the Red Devils to a dominant triumph. The Scot then exited stage left and several men have tried and failed to emulate him with the club ploughing through players in search of a winning team.

A huge £1billion has been spent on new signings and the best United have to show for that is two second-place finishes with disasters never far away. The Glazers have spent big, backing numerous managers since Ferguson's exit with the likes of Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal failing to maximise the talent available.

The club's transfer record has been broken numerous times and Artificial Intelligence from ChatGPT has compiled the best starting XI of players who've represented the club since Ferguson's departure - albeit some of them he signed himself.

David de Gea, up until this season, had been the only ever-present from the Ferguson era with the Spaniard often excelling in a team that have struggled. That is underlined by the amount of individual accolades he won whilst he was No 1 at Old Trafford.

Antonio Valencia and Rio Ferdinand, two Ferguson signings, are half of the best back four according to AI with Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw completing it. Ferdinand was a £30m signing from Leeds in 2003 but only played for the club for one season before moving on after Ferguson left.

Maguire, despite being picked, has often been ridiculed whilst in Manchester. He's struggled to justify his mammoth fee with United making him the world's most expensive defender. He's lost the captaincy under the current regime and is very much a squad player.

Shaw was signed by Van Gaal and, despite some difficult periods, has been one of the club's most consistent performers. The same could be said of Michael Carrick, who remained at the club beyond the Ferguson era. His experience was crucial in midfield and defence before he eventually became part of the coaching staff.

Paul Pogba remains the club's most expensive player ever and, despite many seeing him as a star who under-delivered, he also makes the XI. After his debut season, the Frenchman failed to deliver a single trophy with the constant debate surrounding his most effective position before he left on a free.

Bruno Fernandes, the current club captain, proved to be the spark the club needed when he arrived in 2020. His goals and assists from midfield were crucial in United's period under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Two academy graduates, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford form the crux of the front three. The former has left the club while Rashford has performed in patches, producing his best season last year. Somehow Anthony Martial, signed as a teenage sensation from Monaco in 2015, has made the XI.

The Frenchman has never found any consistency, which led to a loan spell away several years ago. He's now struggling for regular minutes and an exit is thought to be on the cards. The line-up omits over £300m worth of attacking talent in Romelu Lukaku, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Casemiro all overlooked.

Lukaku was prolific early on but fell down the pecking order after Mourinho's sacking whilst the others have underperformed or only been at the club a short amount of time. Angel di Maria, previously a club-record signing, is another man whose impact was minimal as he only stayed for a year. Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof - all pricey signings at centre-half - have been overlooked.
