A woman was murdered while she was waiting for the outcome of her application to move with her family to the US over concerns for her safety.

The 34-year-old lived in Honduras and had previously fallen victim to another attack in front of her two daughters, from which she recovered fully.

She then initiated the process to move to the US, hoping to escape a country that recorded nearly 300 femicides in just a year.

Karina Melisa Rodríguez was found dead at the entrance of a store she owned in La Entrada, a town in the Honduran department of Copán, on January 3, in the afternoon.

She ran the shop selling natural remedies and was a well-known businesswoman and model in the local community.

Local news outlet telesurtv.net reported that Rodríguez died at the hands of a man, who hasn't been identified or arrested.

In a previous attack from which she managed to survive, the mum was reportedly shot and injured with four bullets while she was walking home from church with her daughters.

Family members of Rodríguez reported the attack was done by a group of criminals, the identity of whose remains unknown.

Her daughters were unharmed in the attack.

Following the alleged shooting, Karina’s relatives advised her to not return to her business and expose herself to another attack.

However, obliged by the need to provide for her family, the woman returned to work as soon as she could.

Due to death threats she faced, Karina applied to move her family to the US for their safety.

The application was being processed when she was allegedly murdered in her shop.

The motive for her killing and the identity of the perpetrators remains unknown and an investigation is ongoing.

According to a report at the end of last year, 293 femicides took place in Honduras between 1 January and 20 December 2022.
