Roberto Carlos has highlighted what Manchester United missed out on by praising “amazing” Kieran Trippier.

The Newcastle defender has shone for the Magpies this season, with his latest displays adding to a long list of strong performances since joining from Atletico Madrid. He has made 14 appearances for Eddie Howe’s side this season and already has seven assists to his name.

One man who is a fan of Trippier is former Brazil and Real Madrid defender Roberto Carlos. The three-time Champions League winner claims that the former Tottenham fullback is an all-round defender. Speaking with JohnnyBet.com, he said: “We can see an evolution in the role of full-backs and I was particularly impressed with Trippier as he was able to play on the left-hand side for the England national team.

“I wouldn't have been able to play on the right of defence but in modern football you need to play on both sides. He has an amazing personality and is very good.”

Given the praise that Trippier is receiving this season, United might well bemoan their failure to sign the defender. The Red Devils were linked with a move during his time with Spurs.

It was also claimed that they renewed that interest during the right-back’s time with Atletico Madrid. Asked by Mirror Football if United were in the mix to sign him, Trippier replied: “Yes they were.

“There were a couple of clubs. Me and the manager had a chat at the start of the season and agreed if an opportunity came up I might go.

“At the start of the season I had a couple of family problems. To be fair they didn’t want to come back. It didn’t happen, so I carried on. I am not one to throw my toys out of the pram when it didn’t happen.

“I didn’t have to leave Madrid. I want to make that clear. I loved it there and it was a successful time. I had a few options as well. But for my family it was important.”

Trippier started on the bench in midweek as Newcastle thumped Man United 3-0 at Old Trafford to end their Carabao Cup success. He was afforded a 15-minute cameo at the end of the clash.

That defeat saw the pressure crank up hugely on manager Erik ten Hag, with claims that he could be sacked growing stronger in the aftermath of the game. Meanwhile, reports also suggested that some players in the dressing room were already concerned that the Dutch coach was not capable of dragging the side out of their current mire.
