Many of us have probably considered a last minute dash to the airport to get out of the country at least once. As a fantasy, jumping on a plane and escaping real life and travelling to what is most likely to be much better weather outside of the UK seems pretty ideal. But for one woman, the reality was decidedly different when her impromptu trip to Ibiza - motivated by a day of drinking - turned into a nightmare that unexpectedly cost her hundreds of pounds.

Rachael Wynn from Salford called her last minute decision to fly to Ibiza where she had some friends holidaying, "one of the stupidest things I've ever done" after she drunkenly made the call to go after spending a day at a christening, only to realise what a big mistake she was making once she was on the plane.

The boozy incident took place in 2019, when Rachael was 32 at the time. When she was asked why she decided to act so impulsively, Rachael said: "I was p***ed," and explained that: "I was at a christening and it was also my friend's birthday that day so I went to my friend’s afterwards. "My friends were already here in Ibiza and asked if I wanted to come." Rachael also admitted the decision was so last minute she only took with her "the clothes on my back, my bank card and my passport."

Rachael said that she got a taxi to Manchester Airport with a friend and arrived at around 2am on Monday morning. She said she bought a flight to Ibiza with Jet2 - and that her knowledge of boarding the plane is "a distant memory" that she "can't remember". However, she admitted was "still loving life at the airport" but that "when I got on the plane I thought 'what have I done?'." Overall Rachael called it "the stupidest thing I have ever done. I’m not like this usually. I've never done anything like this.

The unusual decision was definitely the result of alcohol, according to Rachael, who said at the time: "I was p***ed. I was absolutely p***ed. I had been drinking all day at this christening." Rachael then desperately tried to get home after arriving in Ibiza at around 9am, when she was supposed to be in work. "I tried so hard to get a flight back yesterday," she said. "I had to ring my boss and explain and say I had a flight on Wednesday. He said I had to get a flight sooner than that. I managed to book one for this morning but they emailed to say there were no flights left.

"I booked another for tonight to go via Frankfurt but they didn't send me the tickets in time." Rachael then managed to secure a flight for the following day, but said that, "the whole thing has cost me about £700." Luckily, Rachael was hopeful that her boss would be relatively accommodating to her mishap, despite initially being "not happy at all, but he's alright now I think. He's a great boss and it's a great company to work for. He will be disappointed but hopefully he'll see the funny side.

"The only reason I went is because I thought I'd be able to get home in time for work. I feel really bad about it." Rachael, who worked for a housing company at the time, stayed in a friend's hotel room on Monday night. After spending almost a day in the same clothes she was helped out by a group of girls who she discovered lived around the corner to her in Salford. "They were these lovely girls from Kersal," she said.

"Everyone else had gone out and left me in the room to get some sleep, but I was hungry so I went out to get some food and ended up getting locked out. I was walking the streets asking for anyone who spoke English and found these girls. They let me have a shower, use their hair brush and gave me clean underwear. They were so lovely."

Rachael then booked her own hotel for the following night before she prepared to fly back home early on Wednesday morning. Her friend, Kristina Wilkinson, said the story will be "one to tell her grandchildren" when she's older. She told the Manchester Evening News at the time that "everyone [was] calling her crazy and I've personally never known anything like it. It's so funny."

Kristina was the one who had dropped Rachael off at the christening on Sunday before her Spanish adventure unfolded. "She said 'I've got work in the morning and when it escalates I'm going home'. She usually does. I was at work the next day and sent her a message asking 'did you get to work okay?' and she replied and said: 'mate I'm in Ibiza'. I couldn't believe it so she sent me a little video with palm trees. She was laughing but she said 'my boss is going mad and if I'm not in work tomorrow I'm getting sacked'.

"They all went to Ocean Beach last night and she couldn't go. She went to KFC and got talking to these girls who took her back to their hotel, let her have a shower and gave her some clean clothes. She's really trying to get home so she's spending loads of money on flights. I know she was going to bed early last night. I was worried about her because she was upset about work and she couldn’t get a flight. She takes her job really seriously."
