The humble crisp is one of the most popular snacks here in the UK, with around six billion packets being consumed every year. One brand that's a go-to for many is Walkers, with the company having some iconic flavours.

Fans of the crisp brand will likely have been dismayed by the recent news of the popular Worcester sauce-flavoured crisps being axed - and now it seems there's another savoury tragedy taking place, as they've ditched yet another staple. The company has now confirmed that it no longer makes or sells Beef and Onion flavour - and hasn't since 2022.

These packets will be joining a long list of discontinued flavours, but how many of the weird and wonderful ones do you remember? The Museum of Crisps revealed to Leicestershire Live some of the old but gold flavours which you can no longer buy. Here's a look...

In 2008 Walkers ran its Do Us A Flavour campaign which saw six bizarre new flavours. Flavours like Cajun squirrel, chilli and chocolate, onion bhaji, fish and chips, crispy duck and hoisin, and builders breakfast took the UK by a storm.

The latter flavour was suggested by Emma Rushin of Belper, Derbyshire, who won £50,000 and one per cent of future sales of her flavour. The flavour was discontinued two years after winning the campaign, in 2010.

Cajun squirrel was a surprising favourite from this campaign, thought up by marketing executive Martyn Wright, from Hednesford, near Tamworth. "I wanted something unique," he said. "The gentle Cajun flavouring will be delicious, and although the idea might sound bizarre, it really works. I've seen squirrel on restaurant menus and on cookery shows but had never tried it myself."

In the same year Builder's Breakfast was discontinued, Walkers released a tournament in celebration of the 2010 World Cup. American Cheeseburger went head-to-head against the likes of French garlic bread, Italian spaghetti bolognese, and even English roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. While the latter won, the American Cheeseburger flavoured crisps were a total hit.

Another discontinued flavour in the hearts of many Brits is BBQ Rib. Many people have felt so moved by Walkers' discontinuation of the flavour that they've taken to petitioning for its return. While many people have set up petitions, they've only managed to accumulate less than 100 signatories between them.

Other crisp flavours include baked bean, Brussel sprout, cheese cucumber and salad cream - and the incredibly popular toasted cheese. There have been times where Walkers teamed up with other classic brands to produce certain flavours, like Branston Pickle, KFC and Gourmet Burger Kitchen Classic Cheeseburger.

What's your favourite flavour of crisps that's been discontinued? Let us know in the comments.
