The La Sultana Oualidia hotel in Morocco is a gem of a complex.

It sits tucked away at the edge of a lagoon on the Atlantic coast 125 miles south-west of Casablanca in the small fishing village of Oualidia – known as Morocco’s ‘oyster capital’.

Every aspect of the resort contributes to the calm and relaxing atmosphere, with plenty of cosy places to nestle away so you can relax and unwind.

Sustainability and nature are at the heart of everything that is on offer here, from the locally caught seafood to the activities available nearby.

Moroccans consider Oualidia as being a high-end beach destination, which comes as no surprise considering the quality displayed here.

The style

Based in a Moorish fortress on the edge of the shore, the hotel has 12 bedrooms and suites. It is extremely tranquil, while also offering privacy with considerable spaciousness.

The site stretches from the hillside down on to the shoreline, with its restaurants, jetty and terraces all offering stunning panoramic views of the surroundings.

The ornate bedrooms are extremely comfortable with two armchairs in each, while every individual room also has its own private terrace with an outside table and a seawater hot tub to help you unwind.

Orange, olive and jacaranda trees surround the hotel, with fountains and flowered balconies dotted around the grounds too.

Food and drink

La Sultana boasts three restaurants, with the menus all featuring ethically sourced meat and fish options from local producers.

Vegetables are also grown on site in the hotel’s organic vegetable garden.

You can’t leave without trying a tagine dish, which cooks the vegetables until they’re tender and succulent. The seafood is as fresh as can be, with calamari, spider crab, mussels, lobster and sea bass among the dishes on offer. Make sure you also don’t miss the delicious, freshly baked Moroccan breads which are perfectly complemented by an array of spreads, including honey.

La Table de la Plage serves a serene spot for lunch, with a wide array of seafood on offer.

Le Table de la Sultana offers French-inspired dishes, while The O Bar – located at the end of the pier overlooking the water – is a great spot for locally grown oysters, washed down with a glass of Moroccan wine.

Oualidia has surf all year, and its safe and easy conditions are perfect for beginners and children aged six and above, as well as advanced surfers (the Moroccan King’s children come to the area to surf).

You can also go cycling around the lagoon’s peninsula and up on the sandy cliffs above the beach, which offers great views.

A safari in a boat on the lagoon, an ecological site for bird conservation that extends over 7.5 miles, is also highly recommended.

Depending on the season, you can see pink flamingos, storks and grey herons, among others.
