King Charles has spoken of the sweet moment his son William proposed to his "beloved" daughter-in-law on a trip to Kenya.

Prince William popped the question to future Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton during a glamorous holiday to Kenya 13 years ago, before the pair publicly announced their engagement one month later.

The monarch is currently on a trip to the East African nation as the country prepares to celebrate 60 years of independence - and mentioned the couple's memorable day during a state banquet in the capital of Nairobi. He said: "It was here, in sight of Mount Kenya, that my son, The Prince of Wales, proposed to his wife, now my beloved daughter-in-law."

For their romantic getaway in 2010, the couple stayed in one of the luxurious Rutundu log cabins alongside the picturesque Lake Rutundu. The cabins come with private decks, and views of the surrounding landscape - including Mount Kenya - and offered a perfect discreet setting for William. Speaking of his nerves before the big moment a few weeks after their engagement was announced, the then-Duke of Cambridge said: "As every guy out there will know, it takes a certain amount of motivation to get yourself going. So I was planning it, and then it just felt really right out in Africa. It was beautiful." In the same interview, Kate admitted that it was a "total shock" when William got down on one knee, and added: "There's a true romantic in there."

A decade later in 2020, William also revealed that the Royal Family's emotional connection to Kenya helped him decide on choosing Kenya. He told a Buckingham Palace reception celebrating the UK's relationship with Africa that the continent "holds a very special place in my heart", as it was the place his father "took my brother and me" shortly after his mum Princess Diana died.

On the state banquet on Tuesday, the King also mentioned how Queen Elizabeth II was in Kenya when she discovered her father King George VI - meaning she would be the new monarch. He said: “It is well known, I think, that my dear Mother, The late Queen, had a particular affection for Kenya and the Kenyan people. She arrived here in 1952 a Princess, but left as Queen.

“It is extremely moving to read her diary from that visit, in which she wrote that she did not want to miss a moment of Kenya’s extraordinary landscapes. I really cannot thank you enough for the support Kenya gave her through that difficult time.” At the banquet, King Charles also acknowledged the pain inflicted upon the country by Britain's colonial past, which he called a cause of "deepest regret".
