British Soap Awards axed with no explanation in huge blow for stars
ITV have announced they have cancelled the British Soap Awards due to take place next year.
No explanation has been given to why the decision has been made. It comes after 2.9 million viewers tuned into this year's award ceremony that marked soap's biggest night out. Yet in a statement to The Mirror, an ITV spokesperson said: "The British Soap Awards won't be on air in 2024 but is set to return in 2025. The show was fantastically received in 2023, achieving consolidated figures of 2.9 million and doubling its audience year on year, so we look forward to the show's return."
This year, singer and presenter Jane McDonald took to the stage to front the annual event, which was usually presented by Phillip Schofield. The show faced much speculation over who would take over presenting duties after his abrupt exit from the channel earlier this year.
The glitzy award ceremony saw all the telly favourites came together to celebrate their achievements. Stars from the nation's most loved soaps including Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks all gather for the event. The first British Soap Awards took place in 1999 and was presented by Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan.
They held the hosting job until 2001 as Matthew Kelly presented the 2002 awards, before being replaced by Des O'Connor and Melanie Sykes in 2003. Comedian Paul O'Grady took over for 2004 and 2005 before Phillip Schofield and Fern Britton became hosts in 2006. Phil went on to present every award ceremony up until this year.
