Sophie Ellis-Bextor is seen setting fire to a pile of Christmas cards as she leads a string of celebrities starring in the new Marks and Spencer Christmas advert for their clothing and home range.

People across the UK may have barely finished their trick or treat sweets, but that hasn't stopped the beloved high street store from dropping its first advert of the festive season – ahead of its highly anticipated food commercial, will is set to be released.

The advert, which features songstress RAY BLK singing a cover of Meatloaf's I Will Do Anything for Love, features singer Sophie, Hannah Waddingham, Zawe Ashton and Tan France as the stars portray the brand's festive message of choosing the things you love this Christmas – rather than doing the things we feel we need to.

The advert beings with Sex Education star Hannah, 49, entering a festively decorated dining room to discover a half decorated snowman – appearing to be a children's school project. She sighs and begins to get to work finishing the art, sticking balls of cotton wool into the pretend snowman with a glue gun. It then cuts to Queer Eye style expert and star Tan France decorating his Christmas tree – choosing to top the tree with a homemade decoration crafted from a loo roll over a glitzy star.

The 40-year-old sighs before putting the handmade decoration at the top and staring at it as he makes his way down a ladder and rolls his eyes. The advert then visits Zawe Ashton's home, where she is seen playing charades with her family in a stunning silver dress.

Kitchen Disco star Sophie, 44, is seen using a blowtorch to singe the roof of her impressive gingerbread house, before she is seen looking at a pile of Christmas cards on the kitchen surface and shaking her head. A close up of her eyes shows the blue flames of the torch as she turns and sets the pile of cards alight.

The clip cuts to actress Hannah trying to take a drink of her gin before she notices a ball of cotton wool in it. Next Tan is seen at a Christmas party, where he approaches a group of people playing a board game. Tan shakes his head and grabs the board game and flings it behind him – sending it up into the air before it lands in a fish tank. The guests are seen in dismay as Tan smiles and shrugs – showing he isn't a fan of board games at Christmas.

The Marvels star Zawe is then seen stood on a snowy rooftop holding an Elf on the Shelf character in one hand and a baseball bat in the other. She then swiftly chucks the elf in the air and whacks it with the bat – sending it flying over rooftops. Hannah is then seen in her snowy garden holding a tray of gold foil Christmas party crowns and putting them into the back of a shredder – which then lets off an explosion of gold confetti, causing Hannah to scream before she laughs.

Hannah is then seen holding her arms out to admire the gold confetti falling from the sky before something lands next to her. She looks down and there is the elf which Zawe hurled from her roof earlier. Hannah picks up the toy and looks at the shredder and looks back at the camera raising her eyebrows, before the ad ends.

Hannah Waddringham said of filming the campaign: "I love the build up to Christmas and all the magic and sparkle that comes with it! If I'm perfectly honest, I'd be happy to start it all in November! Getting glammed up and spending time with loved ones and family is something I look forward to the most, so filming this campaign really got me in the festive spirit.

"M&S is always my go-to destination for picking up Christmas gifts and let's not forget the foooood!......so being involved in the campaign has been so special and a great pleasure."

The advert is set to hit TV screens this evening ahead of M&S's highly-anticipated Christmas food commercial.
