As has become tradition, installing the latest Call of Duty game on consoles will require significant storage space on your SSD.

Call of Duty players are well accustomed to large file sizes for every new annual release. Well, in case it wasn’t already obvious that Modern Warfare 3 would follow suit, the required storage space for Soap and Captain Price’s next outing has seemingly been uncovered – at least on PS5. What makes this latest revelation sting all the more, is that it just takes into account solely the campaign and doesn’t include SSD requirements for the multiplayer or Warzone.

Word of Modern Warfare 3’s file size for the campaign on Sony’s console comes by way of a post from the @PlayStationSize Twitter account, which makes scrubbing Sony’s servers for file size requirements its main business. Alongside the Call of Duty HQ app needed to launch the campaign – itself an 89GB install already – there are two campaign packs needed to play through the Modern Warfare 3 story. The Campaign Pack 1 install weighs in at 18.042GB while Campaign Pack 2 is 32.942GB. Together that brings the total file size for the campaign at a whopping 140GB, when combined with the Call of Duty HQ app.

Call of Duty campaigns tend to average out at around 6 to 10 hours in terms of playtime, which is fairly short by today’s single-player story standards and makes Modern Warfare 3’s 140GB all the more eye-watering. Of course, you’ll be able to delete the campaign portion after it’s completed to relieve your PS5 SSD somewhat, but it’s usually the case that Activision releases several updates that only sees the file size grow bigger as the months go on for players who plan on sticking with the multiplayer.

Modern Warfare 3 is scheduled to launch on November 10, 2023, just over a year after Modern Warfare 2 – itself a sequel in the Call of Duty reboot trilogy – released on PC and consoles. So far, from the various open betas Activision has made available for people to play, it looks to be a massive improvement on the multiplayer side of things. However, news of the 140GB install for the Modern Warfare 3 campaign will surely have PlayStation users with a launch SSD quaking in their boots.

It's worth noting that Activision itself has yet to confirm the file size for either consoles or PC, but @PlayStationSize has a relatively trustworthy and reliable reputation for getting the stats correct. The 140GB campaign file size is bad enough, eating well into the standard PS5’s 825GB of onboard storage, yet this still doesn’t account for the inevitable day-one patch. As a result, single-player gamers should probably start clearing their SSD in advance of the Modern Warfare 3 campaign's arrival; early access purchasers will need to get a shift on slightly sooner.
