NEC Nijmegen's clash with AZ Alkmaar was abandoned on Sunday after striker Bas Dost suddenly collapsed during the second half.

In the 90th minute, Dost was running forward as part of a late Nijmegen attack but fell to the turf inside the centre circle. Although the game continued for a few seconds until referee Jeroen Manschot noticed that the former Netherlands international was staying on the ground, players from both sides quickly rushed over to him and were hastily followed by medical staff.

Both of the teams formed a shield around Dost, 34, by locking arms as he received treatment, with some players praying for his welfare. In encouraging scenes, the striker regained consciousness before he was taken off on a stretcher.

Nijmegen posted on social media: "Bas Dost is conscious and is taken off the field. The match has been stopped." Fans from both sides at the AFAS Stadion applauded Dost off but were unable to see any further action after the match was abandoned with the score 2-1 to visitors Nijmegen.

Dost had scored the opening goal in the Eredivisie match and assisted Magnus Mattsson to double their lead 20 minutes later. Alkmaar then pulled a goal back in the second half.

The most prolific spell of Dost's career came at Sporting Lisbon, representing the Portuguese giants for three seasons. The Dutchman scored a superb 93 goals in 127 appearances.
