Matthew Perry's romance with Julia Roberts - cameo demand and why he dumped her
Matthew Perry spoke about his romances with a string of famous women in tell-all memoir Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, including his relationship with Hollywood mega star Julia Roberts.
The pair dated around the time Julia appeared in an episode of sitcom Friends with him, where she played his old classmate turned new girlfriend.
Tributes have been paid to Perry this week following the heartbreaking news he has died aged 54 after he was found unconscious in his Los Angeles home. Emergency responders came to his home after receiving a call at 4:07 p.m that the star had suffered a cardiac arrest. However, once they arrived, they reportedly found the star dead in his hot tub.
In his memoir that was released just last year, Matthew wrote about his relationship with A-lister Julia and the saddening reason why he called off their romance. Julia, 56, who guest-starred as Chandler's childhood friend Susie Moss in 1996, in an episode that aired after the Super Bowl.

In the book, Matthew claims Julia only agreed to appear in the second season of sitcom Friends if he would be part of her character's storyline in the episode.

Perry tried to charm Roberts by sending over "three dozen roses" with a note that read, "The only thing more exciting than the prospect of you doing the show is that I finally have an excuse to send you flowers." He added: "Her reply was that if I adequately explained quantum physics to her, she'd agree to be on the show.
"First of all, I'm in an exchange with the woman for whom lipstick was invented, and now I have to hit the books. The following day, I sent her a paper all about wave-particle duality and the uncertainty principle and entanglement, and only some of it was metaphorical.
"Not only did Julia agree to do the show, but she also sent me a gift: bagels — lots and lots of bagels... Sure, why not? It was Julia f***ing Roberts."
Matthew wrote in his memoir: "Julia had been offered the post-Super Bowl episode in season 2 and she would only do the show if she could be in my story line. Let me say that again — she would only do the show if she could be in my story line (Was I having a good year or what?), but first, I had to woo her."
The actor said he struck up a friendship over fax with Julia, who had already starred in Pretty Woman by then. He said that there were "hundreds" of messages between them. Matthew recalled reading fax responses from her "three or four times a day". He said that at one point her fax "veered on romantic" and she gave him her phone number.

Matthew said they later met in person and the relationship began. The actor said they were a couple by the time they filmed together for the episode of Friends and added that they even celebrated New Year's Eve together that year.
He, however, said that he dumped Julia two months later, saying that dating her had been "too much" for him. He said he had constantly felt she would break up with him. Discussing being plagued by his own insecurity, he said: "I could never be enough; I was broken, bent, unlovable. So instead of facing the inevitable agony of losing her, I broke up with the beautiful and brilliant Julia Roberts."
On Saturday, TMZ claimed that the actor had returned home following a round of pickleball (a mash-up of tennis, badminton and ping-pong) and sent his assistant out on an errand shortly thereafter, but was found unresponsive when the aide returned home just two hours later, prompting him to call for help.
The Friends' official Twitter account confirmed his death, as they posted: "We are devastated to learn of Matthew Perry’s passing. He was a true gift to us all. Our heart goes out to his family, loved ones, and all of his fans." A source added that there was no sign of foul play and that robbery-homicide detectives are investigating his death.
Matthew's Friends co-star Maggie Wheeler, best known for playing his on-off girlfriend Janice Hosenstein on Friends, was the first of the cast to pay tribute to him. "What a loss. The world will miss you Mathew Perry. The joy you brought to so many in your too short lifetime will live on," she wrote. "I feel so very blessed by every creative moment we shared."
