James Blunt had The One Show viewers in tears as he share the emotional inspiration behind his new song.

The singer appeared on the show on Friday evening to perform his new single The Girl That Never Was. The 49-year-old told the hosts he wrote the song after he and wife Sofia Wellesley tragically lost their baby daughter.

Opening up, James said: "It's amazing how many people can relate to the song. I'm married. We had aspirations to start a family and... people in my situation have gone through that, you win some battles and you lose some.

"And the ones that we have lost we struggle with a bit. So I wrote a song called The Girl That Never Was." The song includes the lyrics: "We never should have picked a name, 'Cause now she has a face, And now no matter what we do, No one will take her place. Darling, we tried but now it's over, We had it all and then we lost, The girl that never was."

Fans took to Twitter to talk about the emotional moment. One said: "Never been pregnant so never lost a child via miscarriage or for any other reason, but I know many who have. It’s been a weirdly emotional day though so I certainly had a tear in my eye listening to James Blunt’s new song ‘The Girl That Never Was’ on The One Show tonight."

James tied the knot to wife Sofia, who is the daughter of Lord and Lady John Henry Wellesley, in 2014. The pair have two boys and they live between Ibiza and London.

Previously speaking to The guardian, James said: "Being hands-on with my kids when I can is important. I am away for long periods. With my second child, I left the day after the birth for nine months. Fatherhood changed my priorities. I was selfish. Now these little people are far more important than me."

Despite having a successful music career, James has admitted to wanting to "punch [himself] in the face" after some low moments. Artists have said in the past That they'd rather "eat [their] own s**t" than work with him, with others refusing to shake his hand.

James admits wanting to hit himself. "To be honest, when I look back I want to punch me in the face," Blunt told The Times.

He said: "I came out of boarding school and the army and I was very naive and I got a bit of a kicking. Did I deserve it? Yes, probably. Has it kept my feet on the ground? Definitely. And like boarding school, I’ve sort of come to enjoy it. Was I beaten at school? Yes, I was. Did I enjoy that? Yep, probably, and I’m just getting a bit more of it now."

He told the newspaper he'd like to "punch [himself]" after watching back his own awards acceptance speeches. "I honestly wanted to punch myself in the face just as much as anyone else, so maybe they were on to something," he said. Some of his notable awkward moments in his career include run-ins with Paul Weller, Mick Jagger and Noel Gallagher.
