Pet Sematary: Bloodlines

Serving as a prequel to 2019’s Pet Sematary – which was based on Stephen King’s 1983 novel – Pet Sematary: Bloodlines follows young Jud Crandall (Jackson White). Set 50 years before the original story, it follows Jud and his attempts to leave his hometown of Ludlow, Maine.

But before he’s able to leave he discovers a local cemetery that holds a dark power. Jud soon unravels the town and his family’s sinister secrets of the town which holds him back and connects him to Ludlow forever.

But when bodies begin to pile up, Emily and her sorority sisters realise the deaths are being caused by their new house mascot, Alpha.

It isn’t until the girls lock themselves inside the house to celebrate the presidential election night that the truth is discovered about their sluggish pet – that this lacklustre furball is actually nature’s perfect predator.

A Quiet Place

Directed, co-written by and starring The Office star John Krasinski alongside his wife Emily Blunt, this tense post-apocalyptic horror centres on the Abbott family. Along with their children, the Abbott’s fight to survive in a world overrun with blind, blood-thirsty aliens that hunt using sound.

This nail-biter creates its tension with sound – or a lack of – as its protagonists figuratively and literally tip-toe around a world where making the slightest noise could be the death of them.

Significant Other

This sci-fi horror follows young couple Ruth (Maika Monroe) and Harry (Jake Lacy) as they embark on a backpacking trip through the United States’ remote Pacific Northwest. After a meteor strike interrupts their trip, the couple realise they’re not alone as they come up against otherworldly creatures in a series of tense situations that shake the foundations of their relationship.

Event Horizon

Paul W. S. Anderson’s cosmic horror takes viewers to the outer reaches of space in the year 2047 alongside the astronauts aboard the Lewis and Clark starship. When a distress signal is received by the Event Horizon – a ship that mysteriously vanished years earlier – Captain Miller (Laurence Fishburne) and his crew are dispatched to investigate.

Upon boarding the Event Horizon with its designer, Dr. Weir (Sam Neill), the crew finds signs of a bloody massacre, as they themselves are thrown into a hellish nightmare.

The Ring

Based on the 1998 Japanese horror Ringu, Gore Verbinski’s 2002 supernatural horror centres around a cursed videotape that leads anyone who views it to die exactly one week later. When four teenagers all meet mysterious deaths after watching the tape together, investigative reporter Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts) tracks it down.

After watching the video with her young son, Rachel realises the legend is coming true and she has just seven days to avoid her fate.

Orphan: First Kill

This psychological horror serves as a prequel to 2009’s shocking horror hit, Orphan, and continues Esther’s terrifying saga. But an unexpected twist arises that pits her against a mother who will protect her family from the murderous “child” at any cost.

Mimic

The second feature film from Mexican writer-director Guillermo del Toro, this 1997 sci-fi horror stars Oscar-winner Mira Sorvino and Josh Brolin in a battle between man and nature. A deadly disease is spreading throughout New York City and causing the deaths of hundreds of children, leading biologist Susan Tyler (Sorvino) and her team to develop a cure to eradicate the deadly bugs.

Three years later, Tyler learns that her experiment in genetic engineering has gone horribly awry and the bugs have evolved to mimic their next prey, humans.
