Waterloo Road fans switched off the BBC show moments in as it returned tonight after seven years off air.

The iconic programme returned to our screens this evening for the first time in nearly a decade, with Angela Griffin reprising her role as Kim Campbell, Headteacher of the school, as well as Adam Thomas and Katie Griffiths returning as Donte and Chlo Charles. Kym Marsh, Jo Coffey, Vincent Jerome and James Baxter have also joined the cast for the new series.

As the show aired this evening, fans quickly took to social media to comment on the programme being back. Some were full of praise whilst others switched off moments in, saying it wasn't like the original.

"Kudos to #WaterlooRoad for going right back to its roots and taking on difficult issues head-on. This is what we want to see from the reboot!," one wrote, as another added: "Can I just say; @WaterlooRoad starting with the exact same song it did all those years ago!"

A third shared: "Only taken the BBC 10 mins to ruin a once good show #WaterlooRoad #woke," with a fourth writing: "Nahh not watching another episode of #WaterlooRoad after that. I'll stick to the Original series."

"Lol what an absolute let down #WaterlooRoad is. Should’ve stopped when they were going to move the school to Scotland. Should’ve left it at that. New series…," a fifth penned.

In tonight's episode, the drama instantly returned as Donte and Chlo got excited for Izzy's first day at school. There was a peaceful protest held at the school – but soon it turns into a huge riot and Kim struggled to keep things under control.

The trio were thrilled to be making a return to the BBC show.

Angela had previously said of her return: "I feel really honoured to be joining the new series of Waterloo Road. It is exciting to be stepping back into Kim’s shoes and I can’t wait to explore her life, character and how she has evolved since we last met her. The writers have some amazing storylines planned and I’m looking forward to welcoming viewers back to Waterloo Road."

"I'm so excited to go back to where it all started! Waterloo Road was a huge part of my life and career so to go back 15 years later is a dream come true. I feel so blessed to have been given this opportunity to get back to acting and doing what I love!" Adam added.

"I can’t wait to see some old faces and some new. I know this series is going to be the best one yet," whilst Katie said of her return, "I am incredibly excited to be returning to Waterloo Road - loved by all who make and watch it! Chlo was my first professional acting role, and I feel so lucky to be part of the show again. I can't wait to see what stories unfold!"
