Evra issues Man Utd demand as he singles out two players from Copenhagen win

Manchester United legend Patrice Evra has called on Red Devils' fans to get behind the players and stop 'the hate' after the 1-0 win over Copenhagen.

Erik ten Hag's side knew that nothing less than a win would do when they welcomed the Danish outfit to Old Trafford for match-day three of their Champions League group stage campaign. Having lost the first two fixtures against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray respectively, another slip-up could have cost the club its place in the competition.

However, with the stakes high and emotions running even higher given it was the first home clash since the death of club icon Sir Bobby Charlton, United secured the win late on courtesy of a Harry Maguire header in the 72nd minute. Though the goal was late, there was still time for more drama.

The hosts conceded a penalty deep into second-half stoppage time and it looked like Jordan Larsson was going to snatch a point for Copenhagen, but Andre Onana rose to the occasion and saved the spot-kick. His shot-stopping heroics sparked wild celebrations from players and fans alike.

After the game, Evra took to Instagram to write: "I’m begging all my @manchesterunited fans to keep supporting every player on this team thank you @harrymaguire93 and @andreonana.24 never give up #ilovethisgame #positive4evra #manchesterunited." The Frenchman's social media activity didn't stop there, however.

Evra also continued to plead with fans in the comments section of one of United's posts highlighting Onana's save, where he added: “The hate has to stop please," alongside a praying hands emoji. The remark refers to the intense scrutiny both Maguire and Onana have been subject to in recent months.

Maguire has long had to endure criticism for his poor form, but has come in and out of the United starting line-up which in turn has meant there has been brief respite. Onana, on the other hand, has featured in all of United's games so far this term and high-profile errors have led to many questioning his signing.

After the game, the goalkeeper was praised by his manager, with Ten Hag telling reporters: "He showed personality. He knows that before, given the levels of his skills, he didn't match his skills and he could do better.

"I think on Saturday [against Sheffield United] it was a very good performance and today as well. Don't forget that brilliant save just after half-time in the counter-attack. And also don't forget, one of his skills is he's a very good penalty saver."

Onana was humble during his own post-match media duties, adding: "I just had to do my job, you know, I had to do it for us to win, to win against a very tough opponent, we had a great game. Great goal from the big man, Harry, and I'm very happy, we have to continue like that."
