David de Gea has been pictured with his "brothers" at Manchester United - as speculation over a potential return continues to grow.

De Gea, 32, was released by United in July after 11 years at Old Trafford. The decision to axe the Spaniard was controversial, as his replacement Andre Onana is struggling to live up to his billing. The 27-year-old goalkeeper arrived from Inter Milan in a £47million deal.

Onana has kept two clean sheets and conceded 13 goals in nine Premier League games since his transfer. The former Ajax stopper has also struggled in the Champions League, conceding seven goals in just two games and making a howler against Bayern Munich.

Many fans would like to see De Gea, who is still a free agent, return to Erik ten Hag's squad sooner rather than later. He's done little to quash that speculation by going for a coffee with four of United's current stars, including captain Bruno Fernandes.

Fernandes uploaded a picture of him with De Gea, Raphael Varane, Tom Heaton and Victor Lindelof to Instagram on Monday afternoon. "Coffee and friends is always a good choice," wrote Fernandes, accompanied with a winking emoji.

De Gea wrote "brothers" in response - while former United star Juan Mata, who wasn't pictured at the meeting, wrote: "I only see good people in (at) that table."

De Gea has failed to find another club since his exit and travelled to Manchester to see old friends, sparking speculation of a return to Old Trafford. He was recently pictured watching United's women's team in Champions League action at Leigh Sports Village.

Onana was signed as an upgrade to De Gea, having previously worked with Ten Hag at Ajax - winning three Eredivisie titles. Former United striker Louis Saha believes Onana should be given time to settle at Old Trafford, but he doesn't think he's better than De Gea.

"From what we've seen from Onana, I wouldn't say he's an upgrade on David de Gea," Saha recently told King Casino Bonus. "However, I'd add that Onana only has to upgrade his performance by 20 or 30 percent. Once he does that, then he'll eliminate his mistakes and start making the saves we all know he can make."

De Gea achieved plenty of success during his time at Old Trafford, winning eight trophies - including the Premier League title and FA Cup. He was named as United's Player of the Year a joint-record four times and won two Premier League Golden Gloves.
