A chip shop is selling a bag of chips for just 5p to help families struggling with the cost of living.

Iestyn's Fish Bar in the town of Pontypool, Wales, has introduced the offer where customers can get a cheap serving of fries when they buy any other main food item.

The owner of the fish bar, Iestyn Evans, said the 5p deal usually happens two or three times a month. The 28-year-old came up with the idea as a way to "give back to customers" during tough times.

He told Wales Online: "We do have a good loyalty base. Prices are getting better for us but it's too soon for us to put our prices down - but putting stuff like these little offers in does help. Last time we did it it gave everyone a little pick me up a little bit of a buzz".

Iestyn launched the first 5p chip day on September 26, and it proved a huge hit. He said: "It was very popular for us at that time normally on a Tuesday we are really quiet. We've had loads of people coming in since then mainly people who were a bit gutted that they'd missed out on it. They were like: 'When's the next 5p day?'"

The generous offer was extended to two hours and delighted customers once again on Tuesday, October 17, from 3.30pm until 5.30pm. Hairdresser Kerry Jones, 33, only heard about the deal the day before. She said: "I thought it was really cool 5p for chips, you can feed the whole family for the evening."

Local resident Claudette Blair, 56, praised the deal as "very good for people who can't afford a good meal," adding: "It's good for the less fortunate than us." Kevin Galsworthy, 46, another local, spotted the offer on the fish bar's Facebook page. He called the deal "brilliant" and managed to get sausage and chips for under £2. "You couldn't cook it really for that yourself," he said, adding that he'd be back soon and would "probably have fish and chips next time".

Dan Rogers, 29, from the nearby town of Cwmbran, left the shop with a full meal costing just £12, and said: "It's feeding a family of five. Usually I've come here and it would be about £25 or £26 so it's pretty much half," he said, adding: "It's one of the best chip shops around."

First-time business owner Iestyn, who has been running the chip shop for two years, has received heaps of praise for the deal. He'd been working at Page's Fish & Chips in Cwmbran since 2011, and bought its branch in the Sebastopol area of Pontypool off his boss two years ago. He has lived in the suburb for most of his life and his shop is just a couple of minutes away from his parents' house. He encouraged customers to keep an eye on the shop's Facebook page for alerts about the next 5p chip day.
