Manchester United paid tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton before their 2-1 victory over Sheffield United on Saturday.

The Red Devils legend sadly died yesterday at the age of 86, having helped England win the 1966 World Cup and been part of United's legendary 'Busby Babes' side.

In other United news, Sir Jim Ratcliffe is edging closer to putting an end to the Manchester United takeover saga. The INEOS chief is on the verge of landing a 25 percent stake at Old Trafford for £1.4billion.

The deal will give him control of sporting operations, with Ratcliffe looking to form a three-man 'football committee'. However, he is facing a battle to bring in his No.1 choice to be the club's new sporting director.

Casemiro has United 'regrets'

Casemiro has regrets over joining Manchester United with the club wanting to sign Benfica’s teenage midfield star Joao Neves.

Casemiro joined United in a £70million deal last summer to end a trophy-laden nine years at Real Madrid – where he won five Champions League crowns at the base of a midfield alongside Toni Kroos and Luka Modric. The trio formed a formidable partnership that largely dominated Europe.

The Brazilian’s arrival has helped transform Erik ten Hag’s team in his debut season, adding balance, control and structure to the side while also becoming a leader on the pitch. United ended their six-year trophy drought with the EFL Cup title, while also reaching the FA Cup final and recording a top three league finish.

Webb's comments on Man Utd suggest incorrect Arsenal call

PGMOL chief Howard Webb is bracing himself for another apology after referee Chris Kavanagh failed to award Arsenal a penalty during Saturday's game against Chelsea.

The Gunners and the Blues played out a thrilling 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge.

Goals from Cole Palmer and Mykhaylo Mudryk gave Chelsea a two-goal lead before Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard scored to salvage a Premier League point for Mikel Arteta's side.

Yet the game was overshadowed by controversy, as Kavanagh and the VAR officials decided Robert Sanchez's late challenge on Gabriel Jesus didn't warrant a penalty.

The challenge was very similar to Andre Onana's against Wolves on the opening weekend of the season when the Manchester United goalkeeper clattered into two opposition players.

Webb apologised to Wolves fans for failing to award a penalty in that 1-0 defeat and promised to 'learn' from the blunder.

Yet it appears that lesson was ignored after Sanchez got away with clattering into Jesus, with Alan Shearer calling the challenge "terrible".

Man Utd's Hojlund problem

Ruud Gullit does not believe the Manchester United players are "looking" for Rasmus Hojlund as the forward's wait for a Premier League goal goes on.

The 20-year-old has failed to find the net in six top-flight matches since his summer move from Atalanta after drawing a blank in their 2-1 victory over Sheffield United on Saturday.

Scott McTominay and Diogo Dalot scored either side of Ollie McBurnie's equaliser to secure a vital three points for Erik ten Hag's men.

Ratcliffe's Mbappe dream

Dwight Yorke believes Manchester United won't be able to sign players of Kylian Mbappe's calibre again until they win the Premier League title.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is on the verge of buying a 25 percent stake in United after holding off competition from Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani.

Ratcliffe wants to be in charge of football operations, but it's too early to tell whether he will get his wish.

United have struggled on the pitch since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 - failing to win either the Premier League title or Champions League during that time.

"I think Man United has always had the pulling power to attract players like Mbappe, but the success on the pitch in recent years hasn't been able to back that up, and that's why United are struggling to attract the best players in the world," Yorke told investment platform Stocklytics.

"I learned from Sir Alex that in order to attract the best players, you need to dominate domestically - something that's happening across the city.

"Manchester City have been able to attract the world's best players due to their success."

Sickening chant heard

Manchester City have released a statement condemning a “small number of individuals” who chanted about the death of Sir Bobby Charlton.

Charlton sadly passed away on Saturday - with the news of his passing announced at half-time during City’s Premier League clash against Brighton.

The former Manchester United star formed part of Matt Busby's successful Red Devils side of the 1960s, helping the club win three first division titles as well as the European Cup in 1968.

He was one of the few players to survive the horrific Munich air disaster in 1958 which claimed the lives of 23 people.

Latest Mourinho madness

Roma boss Jose Mourinho was sent off on Sunday after telling Monza counterpart Raffaele Palladino: "You talk a lot and then you cry."

In the final minutes of the Stadio Olimpico encounter - which Roma edged out 1-0, against a visiting side who had been reduced to ten men in the first half - Mourinho mocked Monza’s bench, drawing the referee’s attention, and earning a red card in the ninth minute of added time.

Mourinho is a former Manchester United manager.

Ten Hag told to strip Fernandes of the captaincy

Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker has questioned why Erik ten Hag appointed Bruno Fernandes as club captain

"I don’t think he should be captain of Manchester United," Parker told MyBettingSites. "He’s not the kind of person that should have that position because of the way he is.

"Is he someone to lead?” He’s someone to pull something out of the bag when things aren’t going well."

Souness questions Ten Hag transfers

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has been told to expect scrutiny from Sir Jim Ratcliffe over his transfer dealings.

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness says that Ten Hag doesn't deserve a "free pass" after signing three of his former Ajax players and another star from the Eredivisie for a eye-popping total sum of £208million. Lisandro Martinez, Antony, Andre Onana and Tyrell Malacia were all handpicked signings by the Dutchman, who recently guided United to their worst start to a season in 34 years.

Despite Martinez, Antony and Malacia missing much of the campaign so far, Souness has warned Ten Hag that once INEOS founder and chief executive Ratcliffe becomes a minority investor in the club - after his £1.4billion deal to purchase 25 percent of United is complete - and takes control of sporting matters, his recruitment will come under the microscope.

"I read in this newspaper a couple of days ago that Erik ten Hag has welcomed the arrival of Ratcliffe because he is frustrated with recruitment," the former Liverpool captain and manager wrote in his column for the Daily Mail. "I'm sorry, but the manager doesn't get a free pass."

How Charlton launched Beckham's career

Sir Bobby Charlton played an instrumental role in launching David Beckham's career at Manchester United before he became a global superstar.

Tributes have poured in from across the world after Charlton, English football and United's greatest ever player, died at the age of 86 in the early hours of Saturday morning. The 1966 World Cup winner has been hailed for the standards he set throughout his playing career and then after retiring, as he took up a role as a director and ambassador at Old Trafford.

Away from United, Charlton set up his own soccer school back in 1976 and helped unearth a number of players, who would go on to have careers in football, none more high profile than ex-England captain Beckham. The academy was the first of its kind and staged summer and residential sports camps in the UK and abroad, with Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp thanking Charlton for his impact on his own career on Saturday night.

Beckham also revealed how he attended the Bobby Charlton Soccer School in 1985 after seeing an advert on Blue Peter, and that eventually led to the United legend recommending him to his former club. Speaking in a 2017 BBC documentary about Charlton, Beckham said: "That's how my career started at Manchester United. I went at 10 years old and went back there the year after and ended up winning the competition."

Ten Hag hails Maguire

Erik ten Hag saluted Harry Maguire for an outstanding display as Manchester United picked up a second away win of the campaign at Sheffield United.

Maguire turned in his best performance in a United shirt for some time while keeper Andre Onana also made positive strides with several good saves as ten Hag’s stars came under pressure at Bramall Lane before Diogo Dalot’s spectacular winner.

Said ten Hag: "Harry is playing like we want him to play. He was very pro-active, stepping in and dominating his opponent. He was delivering good vertical passing, good switches. I’m happy with his performance. The first half was not a good game on both sides. It was a poor game and you see it often after internationals but especially with us."

Man Utd eye Milan star

Manchester United are monitoring Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders after Erik ten Hag faced fresh criticism for the volume of former Eredivisie players he has signed.

Ten Hag has already raided the Dutch top-flight for the signing of Antony and Lisandro Martinez from Ajax, while he also signed full-back Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord last summer. Former Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana has subsequently signed from Inter, while Mason Mount even had a loan stint at Vitesse.

Reijnders starred for AZ Alkmaar across five seasons in the Netherlands before joining Milan this summer and being capped at international level. The midfielder has impressed in 10 appearances for the Rossoneri and is already being linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Italian outlet Calciomercato claims that United and Paris Saint-Germain are among the clubs who have been impressed by the 25-year-old, who could command a transfer fee in excess of £30million. He would be the latest former Dutch-based player to catch United’s eye.

Neville pays tribute to Charlton

Gary Neville has revealed he was giving a telling off from Sir Bobby Charlton for failing to show the standards expected of him at Manchester United.

United and English football's greatest ever player died at the age of 86 in the early hours of Saturday morning with tributes pouring in across the world. Charlton, who won the World Cup with England, also lifted three league titles and the European Cup at Old Trafford.

After retiring he became a director and was credited with instilling high standards across the club. Neville explained how Charlton would regularly go into the dressing room after matches under the tenure of Sir Alex Ferguson and speak to players, regardless of their result.

Neville paid an emotional tribute to Charlton on Sky Sports on Saturday, describing him as the 'greatest ambassador of Manchester United and the greatest icon of English football'.

Sancho finished even if he says sorry

Jadon Sancho is finished at Manchester United - even if the £73 million winger swallows his pride by apologising to Erik ten Hag.

Sancho, 24, has been left out of United’s last nine games (including Sheffield United) after taking to social media to accuse Ten Hag of lying when the Reds’ boss explained he had axed the England international because of an attitude problem.‌ Ten Hag has banished the former Borussia Dortmund forward from the first-team dressing room until he receives a formal apology.

‌But Sunday Mirror Sport understands that the Dutchman feels that his relationship with Sancho is now beyond repair - and that the club must negotiate an exit strategy for the player in January.

Ratcliffe's Saudi battle

Manchester United face stiff competition from several Saudi Pro League outfits in their bid to take Paul Mitchell as their new sporting director.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is keen to bring someone to the role as he closes in on buying a 25 per cent stake in United, with Mitchell understood to be top of the list. He is out of work after leaving Ligue 1 side Monaco earlier this year and has an impressive track record, having helped take Dele Alli and Heung-min Son to Tottenham and Sadio Mane to Southampton.

But United aren’t the only ones fluttering their eyelids at the 42-year-old, with Saudi sides now looking to recruit directors of football of their own rather than using a central figure, as most have so far.

Fowler's verdict on Ratcliffe

I don't blame Manchester United fans for being angry, frustrated and upset at the circus surrounding the sale of the club…and a bit baffled too.

‌To be honest, I don’t completely understand the ins and outs of why the Glazers selling a minority stake will help in any way - because as far as the fans are concerned it doesn’t resolve the biggest issue of the owners themselves!‌

I’m a bit out of my comfort zone here, I know more about team sheets than balance sheets. But I do believe that Jim Ratcliffe, who owns a multi-billion pound company in Ineos and also has a sports empire, can be the difference United desperately need.

Women's team manager on Ratcliffe

Manchester United manager Marc Skinner has “no doubts” that the potential arrival at the club of British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe will see the women's team spearhead at the forefront of plans for the club's future.

Ratcliffe, 71, is set to invest in the famous English football club after Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani of Qatar withdrew from the bidding process. The owner of Ineos, a petrochemical giant, is increasingly likely to secure a 25 percent minority stake, with the proviso that he has control of the football side at United.

Savage's take on Ratcliffe

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's proposed £1.4 billion investment in Manchester United can only be a success if it impacts where it's needed most – on the pitch.

‌From the outside, it's not easy to see how Sir Jim can change the course of history at Old Trafford if he holds only a 25 percent stake in the club. If the Ineos multi-billionaire is given control of football operations in return for his money, as seems to be the conventional wisdom, he would assume responsibility for results and recruitment.

Ratcliffe to scrutinise transfers

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has been told to expect scrutiny from Sir Jim Ratcliffe over his transfer dealings.

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness says that Ten Hag doesn't deserve a "free pass" after signing three of his former Ajax players and another star from the Eredivisie for a eye-popping total sum of £208million. Sherwood slams "bang average" Varane

Tim Sherwood has slammed Raphael Varane and believes the Manchester United centre-back is "getting away with it" amid criticism aimed at team-mate Harry Maguire.

Varane has struggled for form so far this season and has already missed four matches due to injury, including the Champions League defeat at Bayern Munich last month. In fact, the Frenchman has now sat out of a staggering 36 games since his big-money move to Old Trafford from Real Madrid in 2021.

Probable line-up vs Sheff Utd

Manchester United are set to be without Casemiro for their clash at Sheffield United as Erik ten Hag's injury problems continue.

The Red Devils will head to Bramall Lane minus a host of first-team players as they look to get their season on track following a mixed start. A win over Brentford last time out will have eased the pressure, but anything less than three points in Yorkshire will be looked down upon.

Ten Hag demands Onana improvement

Erik ten Hag has warned Andre Onana he is expecting better performances from him, with his period of grace now over at Manchester United.

Onana has made a poor start to his United career since joining in a £47.2million transfer from Inter Milan in the summer. The Cameroon international has conceded 19 goals in 12 games so far, keeping just three clean sheets.

Ratcliffe's "no bull****" approach

Manchester United have been told to expect a “no bull****” approach from Sir Jim Ratcliffe if they go into business with the INEOS billionaire.

As well as owning Nice and Swiss side Lausanne, Ratcliffe holds a one-third share in the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One team. And speaking ahead of the US Grand Prix, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff gave an insight into what it is like working with Ratcliffe.

“This is a no bull**** organisation," he said. "They are huge in terms of revenue and profit. Decisions are being made quickly – three bullet points on a page and ‘here we go’. With Jim all the bull**** is cut out. So I think wherever he gets his power, and his resource and character behind it, that’s going to be an add-on for any team."
