Jamie Redknapp has urged Harry Maguire to leave Manchester United despite his impressive display against Sheffield United.

Maguire, 30, has struggled for minutes at Old Trafford since Erik ten Hag's appointment in May 2022 and was stripped of the captaincy during the summer. Yet he responded to his critics by putting in a man of the match display against Sheffield United on Saturday.

The Red Devils defeated the Blades 2-1 at Bramall Lane thanks to Diogo Dalot's late winner. Scott McTominay opened the scoring for the visitors before Oli McBurnie equalised to leave the game in the balance.

Maguire has faced plenty of criticism during the last couple of years. Sky Sports pundit Redknapp has defended the England international - insisting he's been "treated disgracefully" by fans - but doesn't believe he has a long-term future at Old Trafford.

Redknapp said: "As a professional, I think he’s been treated disgracefully by football fans. Everywhere he’s been, even his own fans, England fans, he’s been ridiculed and it’s not fair. He’s shown how important he is, and of course, he’s made mistakes.

"Everyone makes mistakes. There are so many players at Manchester United capable of making the mistakes he’s made before but they won’t get a quarter of the stick that he does when Harry Maguire does it. It becomes a meme, everyone starts talking about it.

"Do I think long-term that he'll be the answer for them? I actually don’t, he’s played well recently but I think he’ll have to make his way again somewhere else. But he doesn’t deserve the amount of hate he gets, I think it’s been massively below the belt."

Redknapp's fellow Sky Sports pundit Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has coached Maguire at international level. He added: "I must say, it’s an absolute pleasure to work with him. The boy is always ready to work, he’s always ready to give his all. He never lets us down.

"I knew today what kind of performance you’d get from him - a very honest performance. He always wants to do extra work, he’s actually one of the bravest players I know. And that’s because he always takes the ball, he always takes his responsibility.

"As Jamie said, players make mistakes but he doesn’t shy away from them. But how he’s being treated, it’s not right, it’s not right and I’m happy that he had a really good performance and won the Man of the Match - he deserves it."

Ten Hag was also pleased with Maguire's efforts. He said: "Harry is playing like we want him to play. He was very pro-active, stepping in and dominating his opponent. He was delivering good vertical passing, good switches. I’m happy with his performance."
