Johnny Walker and Magomed Ankalaev’s UFC 294 fight ended in controversy as the pair tried to fight each other after the bout was bizarrely stopped.

Midway into the opening round, Ankalaev landed an illegal knee to Walker, who was still grounded. Referee Dan Movahedi called a halt to the fight and brought in the cage side doctor to assess whether Walker was able to continue.

The doctor then quizzed Walker about what round the fight was in and what country the fight he was competing in. It was unclear if Walker was concussed or he didn’t understand what the doctor asked him, as the Brazilian didn’t reply to either of the questions. The doctor then told Movahedi: “He is not good to continue” and the fight was waved off.

Walker was puzzled at the verdict as he pushed the referee aside and tried to fight Ankalaev despite the fight being stopped. Both Walker and Ankalaev had to be restrained by security members and their cornerman as UFC boss Dana White also entered the cage to calm things down.

No winner was declared as the official decision as declared a no-contest because of the illegal knee from Ankalev, which left Walker unable to continue. Ankalaev then pushed Walker after the decision was read out by Bruce Buffer and White reassured Walker they would figure out the confusion backstage.

UFC legend Conor McGregor, who is a teammate of Walker’s reacted to the bizarre scenes by tweeting: “Get it goin lads we love a brawl hahaha.” Fellow veteran Matt Brown said of the ending: “Johnny Walker is definitely the type to not know what country he’s fighting in and be perfectly fine to fight.”

Walker was hoping to extend his unbeaten streak to four fights with a win against Ankalaev, who hadn't fought since missing out on the light-heavyweight title by fighting to a draw with Jan Blachowicz last December. It's unclear if a rematch will be ordered between Walker and Ankalaev given the controversial ending to their fight.
