New Look raincoats have hit shelves and we put them to the test

If the last couple of months are anything to go by, British weather is more unreliable than ever, and we need to find the right attire for ALL seasons it seems. New Look have just released a new batch of their trusty raincoat collection and we were in love with some of the styles.

I particularly love an anorak fit which makes me feel like the fifth All Saints member, so we had to give some of their very stylish new looks a try.

With grey, black, camel and khaki essential options- the transitional jacket/coat collection will be a winner for those looking to wrap up and keep dry heading into the chillier months.

Here is what Stacey Dutton (Reviews Editor), Beth Shufflebotham (Regional Lead for Fashion & Beauty) and Eve Rowlands (Reviews Writer) all thought of the range.

I was in desperate need of a more practical coat this year (seeing as though I am the master of hoarding all fur, bomber and trench styles), it was time to order a durable and waterproof coat and New Look had quite a few options in stock I really liked.

I have ordered the and on first impressions- it’s a lovely autumnal colour, a great length (goes just over my bum so nice and long for jumper/sweater season) and it looks like it will be a lovely coat to throw on for the school run.

But, I’ve had some issues.

On its first outing, I noticed that the sleeves are really short- this will be a massive issue for me because, as said above, I do like being able to wear cosy jumpers underneath in the chillier months. It’s quite disappointing when I had already sized up from my usual size 10 and when reaching my arms out in front or to the side- the sleeves are pretty much ¾ length.

I have worn it a handful of times and can honestly say it’s great for Autumn and I will continue to wear it, but it will only be used on the odd occasion during winter- it’s just not water resistant or warm enough.

You can pick up the Khaki Hooded Rain Anorak for £34.99 in stores or online.

Much like Stacey, I’m the queen of impractical coats. I have a separate wardrobe entirely for my collection of faux furs, corduroy Penny Lane coats, vintage trenches and hoodless jackets. But as much as I love a ‘personality coat’ where the outerwear very much is the outfit, I knew that this winter I needed to do the adult thing and get a proper winter coat.

The was my winter wardrobe pick, striking a balance between fashion and function. I was a bit jealous last year when my mum got a coat similar, and this black puffer not only becomes the statement, but genuinely keeps you snug while remaining stylish.

The and can easily be layered over chunky knits or loungewear, and its padded fabric acts as an insulator to keep you extra toasty. I’ve so far been using it to walk the dogs, but this is going to be a mainstay in my wardrobe this winter for things like pumpkin picking, Christmas markets and more.

The sleeves are a great length and have an elasticated cuff to keep warmth in - I particularly like how the side bits at the bottom have poppers to open the lower part of the coat to make it easier to sit down or drive in. And best of all, it has a hood - unlike any other coat I own - to keep me dry in the Great British weather. The only downside is that the pockets aren’t very spacious, but are big enough to fit an iPhone 11.

At it’s definitely an investment, but does come in

I love that you can layer it over a tracksuit to disguise your casual attire, or dress it up a little for a day out shopping. You know those winter days where you wish you could take your duvet to work with you? This and I’m 100% here for it.

As someone who hails from the wild, wet and windy west - Wales - you'd think I'd have a raincoat that defies the downpours my home so regularly gets. But you'd be wrong. I have brollies... an old ski jacket... but not a raincoat. And so with colder and wetter weather once again on the horizon, I thought I should bite the bullet this time and order an actual mac - one that supposedly "shelter[s] from the rain in style".

The came within a few days and at first feels like it'll do the job - and doesn't feel thin enough to let rainwater in. It doesn't feel like it'll make you clammy either, which is always a plus. And it’s 3/4ish length, meaning it covers my bum. The fit is a little snug on the shoulders, meaning you wouldn’t be able to fit a jumper underneath it, which is annoying seeing as I opted for a ten when I’m usually between that and a size 8. Despite that, it fit nicely - for the most part. The sleeves were shorter than I expected which left my wrists vulnerable to the Welsh elements, which isn’t the end of the world, more so a nuisance.

I waited until it started spitting to give it a go and rushing out to take my washing off the line, it seemed to do the job. My hair and clothes were all dry as a bone - but to me, this wasn't what I'd call rain. It was a light dusting of water. About ten minutes later, the heavens opened and it was my opportunity to really test it out. Not wanting to go for a walk on the beach or countryside as it was getting dark, I did the next best thing: stood outside in my back garden. The rain was heavy and I was quite disappointed to immediately feel water droplets seeping through the seams at my shoulders. I hate to think what my shoulders would look like on a long walk in such weather. My arms (for the most part) remained dry, but my wrists were soaking unless I put my hands in my pockets because the sleeves just didn't reach.

However, that being said, the rest of me (mostly) remained dry. I'd wear it if it was light-heavy drizzle. In those instances where it's chucking it down, I'll stick to my umbrella for now.

Other alternatives in similar stores...

While we may have had some issues between us with sizing and their waterproof abilities- some of the range is still definitely worth a look if you are looking for a jacket with a high street budget.

The likes of River Island also have a really good value for money Autumn Collection too, with one of our writer's Beth Shufflebotham recently visiting her local store to try out Frankie Bridge's Zara dupe jacket which has been a viral must have for quite some time and she fell in love with it (and wished she actually bought it!)- see the full review here.

For those in need of a pricier alternative and a branded coat is what you are looking for- ASOS have some incredible deals on their winter lines at the moment- even just from a quick skim through I have spotted a Weekday puffer coat with 39% off, a North Face hooded down jacket with 50% off and a Monki padded coat with 40% off.
