Meryl Streep and Don Gummer's split has shocked the world, but here are some signs that their relationship had come to an end.

In a statement given to The Mirror today, Meryl's representative revealed: "Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than 6 years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart."

Not much is known about the couple's relationship as they kept it mostly out of the public eye. But when asked about her marriage in 2002, she said that the secret behind their long union was: "Goodwill and willingness to bend — and to shut up every once in a while."

At the time, in the chat with Vogue, she added: "There’s no road map on how to raise a family: It’s always an enormous negotiation. But I have a holistic need to work and to have huge ties of love in my life."

Meryl's split from Don has shocked the world after she was spotted wearing her wedding ring at the Princesa de Asturias Awards 2023 during the week. And five years ago at the 2018 Oscars, the couple even posed together, despite them reportedly being separated at the time.

However, there were some signs the couple had split, for example a huge hint is that Don has not attended a public occasion with Meryl since 2018 – a year after they split, according to the statement. It also seemed as though things weren't well between the pair in 2017, when the actress purchased a new $3.3 million property in Pasadena, Los Angeles, perhaps as somewhere to lay low as she processed the split.

The couple had also sold a lavish four-bedroom property in 2020 for $15.8million. According to Page Six, the penthouse was first listed in August 2018 for a whopping $24.6million but the price was lowered to $18.25million the following year, before its 2020 sale.

Meryl, who is famed for her many film credits in hit blockbuster flicks like Mamma Mia! and The Devil Wears Prada, was first introduced to Don by her brother back in 1978. The couple share four children together from their lengthy marriage. Meryl and Don are parents to Henry Wolfe, 43; Mamie Gummer, 40; Grace Gummer, 37; and Louisa Jacobson, 30. They also have five grandchildren.
