Get stuck into a Rock on a soft place in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

Ascot’s straight course is sure to be testing ground for Qipco British Champions Day and that will be ideal for French raider BIG ROCK (3.05).

He bolted up from the front on heavy ground at Chantilly in May. The runner-up, Horizon Dore, won his next five starts, including three Group 2 prizes.

It was hardly a disgrace to chase home subsequent Arc de Triomphe hero Ace Impact in the French Derby on quicker ground and he filled the same position behind top-class filly Inspiral in the Jacques Le Marois at Deauville in August.

Although he was again runner-up in a Group 1 at Longchamp last month the going was not as soft as he likes it. There’ll be no problem on that front today.

He’ll keep on galloping out in front and that might well be good enough. Have 2pts to win at 7-1.

AWAAL (4.25) will also love the testing surface in the closing Balmoral Handicap.

He thrashed a decent field on heavy ground at Redcar last autumn and he ran a cracker on his return to action when runner-up behind Migration in the Lincoln at Doncaster in March on similar going.

Simon and Ed Crisford’s runner is weighted to reverse that form with the winner.

His high draw might put some off but the last time this race was run on heavy the winner raced from stall 21. Have 2pts each-way at 9-1. A few bookies are paying out on six places.

BELIEVING (1.50) looks way over-priced in the Qipco British Champions Sprint.

This three-year-old filly has improved rapidly throughout the season.

Her Group 3 victory in France came on soft ground and she also landed a brace of Listed races.

Her most recent effort was even better. Despite racing closer to the stands’ rail than the two horses in front of her, she was only beaten three-quarters of a length in the Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock.

The cheekpieces she wears for the first time could even bring out a bit more improvement. Have 2pts each-way at 20-1. Most bookies are paying out on four places.
