Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has split from her partner after he was caught asking a woman for 'a threesome or even foursome'.

The far-right politician announced the end of her relationship with Andrea Giambruno on social media two days after off-air recordings emerged of the television journalist making sordid and sexist comments towards a female colleague. Ms Meloni, who has a seven-year-old daughter with him, wrote: “My relationship with Andrea Giambruno, which lasted almost 10 years, ends here."

She added: “I thank him for the wonderful years we spent together, for the difficulties we went through and for giving me the most important thing in my life, which is our daughter Ginevra. Our paths have diverged for some time and it is time to acknowledge it.”

In the first off-air clip, broadcast by another Mediaset show, Giambruno complains people criticising his hairstyle before telling his female colleague: “Why didn’t I meet you before?” In the second recording he tells a female colleague that they need another participant on the show, adding: “Let’s have a threesome, even a foursome."

Giambruno is no stranger to controversy and in September he shamelessly said if women wanted to avoid being raped they should “avoid getting drunk”. He made the remarks on air after a series of high-profile rape cases. Ms Meloni defended him at the time saying said his words had been misinterpreted. She added that while they were “hasty” they were similar to what her mum had told her which was to “keep your eyes peeled and head screwed on”.

His other other on-air blunders includes denying the climate crisis when he said: “Heat in the summer isn’t big news."

The pair had met in a Mediaset studio before taking part in a show after a day of political rallies. Giambruno described their meeting as “love at first sight”.
