Chris Kamara has shared the sweet moment his grandchildren learned he was a competitor on The Masked Singer after the TV presenter was revealed as Ghost on the ITV show’s first 2023 episode.

The fourth series of the singing competition returned on New Year's Day as 12 contestants – including one duo – stepped into their costumes for the first time.

As part of the first episode, six stars – Knitting, Jellyfish, Otter, Ghost, and Cat & Mouse and Phoenix – battled it out in pairs in a bid to make it through to the next round.

Joel Dommett returned to host whilst Mo Gilligan, Jonathan Ross, Rita Ora and Davina McCall were all back on the judging panel as they tried to rumble who was behind the mask.

In the opening episode, football pundit Chris was unmasked underneath one of the whacky costumes and he has now shared the moment his family watched the show as he was revealed to be Ghost.

Taking to Twitter, he simply wrote: “Magical moments,” alongside a clip of Chris and his two grandchildren watching the show.

The two little ones were heard cheering ‘Take it off, Take it off, Take it off’, along with The Masked Singer judging panel, before Chris’ grandson, who was sitting on his lap, turned around and shouted: “Grandad! Grandad!”

Chris was beaming in the video as he asked his family: “What do you think of that?,” and his smiling granddaughter replied: “It’s my grandad!”

Asked why he did the show after he was unmasked, Chris said he had signed up for his grandchildren.

He said: “I want to see the surprise on their faces when they see me unmasked on the show.

“Not even my wife knows so it’s going to be a surprise for the whole family.

“I’m not the best at keeping secrets so I’m not sure what will shock them most, taking part in the show or keeping it a secret.”

Chris said he found it particularly difficult wearing the costume, which was quite ‘restrictive’.

“The view was really restrictive which takes a lot of getting used to. I really enjoyed it though it was really fun. I love singing so enjoy any chance I get to sing,” he explained of his difficulties about being on the programme.

It comes just days after Chris Kamara was made an MBE for his services to football, anti-racism campaigning and charity in the New Year Honours list.
