Neighbours legend Ryan Moloney has revealed just how close he came to being written out of the Australian soap during its original TV run.

It's hard to imagine Ramsay Street without Ryan's character Jarrod "Toadfish" Rebecchi, with the brother of Kevin "Stonefish" Rebecchi first popping up in Erinsborough in 1995 and sticking around ever since. However, actor Ryan has confessed Neighbours bosses once had an exit storyline planned for Toadie before changing their mind at the last minute.

Speaking exclusively to the Mirror earlier this month, the dad-of-two, 43, also revealed the item he pinched from the original Neighbours set last year when the soap filmed its not-so-final episode and opened up about the iconic show's new lease of life as a streaming series.

Neighbours: A New Chapter premiered on Amazon Freeve last month, just over a year on from former stars including Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue returned to the soap in that made them a household name to bid farewell to Neighbours following its TV cancellation and final episode airing in August 2022.

In November 2022, it was announced that Amazon Freevee and Fremantle had agreed to a deal that would see Neighbours return to our screens. Regular production resumed in April this year, with the soap making a comeback with stars old and new on September 18.

Ryan, who has played Toadie for almost 30 years, was delighted at the chance to reprise his role after just a few months away from Ramsay Street but clearly wasn't planning to return to the set after nicking an item on the final day of filming the original version of the soap.

"I did take something with me [from the original set] but I'm not going to tell you what it is as it's pretty cool," Ryan revealed when speaking as he launched his partnership with Ring Video Doorbells last month. "I saw it and thought 'that's got to come home with me' and it did." Ryan, who has voiced the first-ever Australian accented Quick Replies for Ring Video Doorbells, admitted no one has spotted the item missing from the new set-up during filming for the Neighbours reboot.

The popular actor may have cemented himself as not just a Neighbours icon but also soap legend, but that doesn't mean Ryan rests on his laurels and feels unsackable from the show. Speaking to the Mirror, Ryan told us how he never expects anything beyond his contract and revealed how he managed to save his skin at the start of his Neighbours stint.

"I worked out in the very early days that the main reason people were given for being fired, nine times out of ten, was: 'We just don't see any more kind of story arc for your character'," Ryan recalled. "So roughly three or four months before the end of my contract I would go to the story team and dump like 15 or 20 story ideas on their desk so they never run out of ideas for me."

He then quipped: "Apparently there was [a day when they'd had enough of Toadie] - I had someone tell me: 'We had a see-you-later storyline for you but you did such a good job we decided to keep you on'!" Touching on Neighbours finding a new home on Amazon Freeve and teaming up with Ring, Ryan humbly mused: "It's quite nice that I have become so well known that Amazon wants to use me as their first Australian person to do the Amazon Ring voices with Quick Replies, but I've only ever ever treated my contracts as the contract, so when they're up, that's when I'm out of work as far as I'm concerned."

Ring has launched new doorbell Quick Replies voiced by fan-favourite Ryan Moloney aka Jarrod “Toadie” Rebecchi to celebrate hit TV show, Neighbours, as the much-loved cast return to screens for the new chapter in partnership with Amazon Freevee.
