Roy Keane and Gary Neville fear Andre Onana may not recover from the calamitous start he has made to his Manchester United career.

Goalkeeper Onana, a £47million summer signing from Inter Milan, has made a series of high-profile blunders since joining United as David de Gea's replacement. Onana let a tame shot past him in United's 4-3 Champions League defeat at Bayern Munich, then made another costly gaffe in a 3-2 loss to Galatasaray, which led to Casemrio being sent off.

The Cameroon star was also at fault for Brentford's opener last weekend, allowing a weak shot from Mathias Jensen to slip through his fingers at Old Trafford. On that occasion, a double from sub Scott McTominay in added time won the game for United and spared Onana from more uncomfortable scrutiny over another big mistake.

But former United captains Keane and Neville have questioned whether Onana can recover from such a poor start, despite De Gea having gone through a similar experience when he first joined. De Gea signed for United in 2011 and spent 12 years in Manchester.

"We lived through this period post Peter Schmeichel and before Edwin van der Sar, where we had Mark Bosnich then Fabien Barthez, then we had Roy Carroll, Tim Howard, Ricardo and Massimo Taibi, six goalkeepers we had in a short period of time, and it was unsettling," Neville told the Stick to Football podcast.

"They were good lads, but you could feel the tension and the unsettled feeling whoever was playing as you knew you didn’t have a presence behind you like Peter had. Then Edwin came and things became calmer as he had the experience and stature.

"David de Gea had issues when he first joined but he got out of it, and I think that is something that Onana is going to have to look at. But my worry is 'Who is that player who is helping Onana through this tricky period?' as they’re all struggling and look like they’ve got heavy legs. So it does concern me how the goalkeeper is going to come out of this tough period."

Keane echoed his former team-mate and said: "I remember speaking to different goalkeeper coaches at United and they all say that keepers make mistakes, everyone does, but it’s how you deal with it at a club like United.

"Peter Schmeichel made loads of mistakes, but he recovered very quickly. However, you’re starting to see mistakes in six or seven games in a row, that is when you start to worry."

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright shared Keane and Neville's concerns over Onana and said the 27-year-old "frightens" him with the slip-ups he continues to make. "When you look at his mistakes, I hope Onana has the confidence to get through it, because what he’s showing must be a facade," said Wright.

"I’m not even a United fan, but he frightens me because he’s making so many mistakes and he worries me as even if the team scores two, you feel they’ll concede three.

"It would scare me playing with him at the moment. I’m not seeing too much in the way he plays on the floor and with the ball at his feet, but what I’m seeing is not making me think he can get through this period."
