A “short king” whose partner towers more than 14 inches above him says strangers often mistake the happy pair for brothers.

Finance worker Charlie Monk, 5ft 7ins, met lofty sales worker Max Gray, 6ft 9ins, at work five years ago and the pair hit it off and started dating soon after. Charlie, 36, Max, 31, barely get glanced at when they are sat together, but attract curious stares when they are stood next to one another due to their height difference.

The pair have poked fun at the discrepancy with a number of hilarious videos shared on TikTok called My stuff vs my 6ft 9 boyfriend's stuff. The clips - including of their shower head and of Max picking his partner to see over a wall - have gone viral and racked up more than 132,000 likes, 1.3 million views and 1,100 comments.

Charlie, from Southampton, Hampshire, said: "I get called short king all the time, it's a comment that comes up really often.

"People do tend to look at Max because of his height, he gets a lot of attention. People usually assume I'm much younger than Max, and are surprised when I tell them I'm five years older. He helps me get saucepans out of tall cupboards and he always changes all the lightbulbs because he doesn't need a step ladder.

"We had someone come in to lay some flooring in our previous house. One of the bedrooms was set up as an office and the other was set up as a bedroom. For some reason he'd seen the layout of the house but he'd still assumed we were brothers, I think it didn't make sense that we were together. It just felt really awkward, so we didn't really know how to react to it, so we didn't say anything and let him assume we were brothers who sleep in the same bed."

Pictures shared on social media show Max's XXL clothing dwarfing Charlie's equivalent clobber, which is size XS-S, the difference in the size of their hands and their mugs. Other snaps show how the couple even eat from different crockery at meal times, with Charlie admitting he isn't able to gobble down as much grub as his tall fella so only needs a smaller plate. Max also does not fully fit in his partner’s Mini and has to have his chair pushed all the way to the back and the roof open so he can sit up straight.

Charlie added: “I was already making TikToks myself doing silly lip-sync videos. Me and Max went to a wedding and we had a really nice photo together, and I got a funny video of him dancing. I put the two together with an audio and that was the first video that got a lot of attention. People obviously liked the fact there was a height difference and it was a bit unusual. It got four million views, so it just went from there."

The couple met at work after Max sent Charlie a 'random' email introducing himself as 'the 6ft 9in guy who walks past your desk every day'. Charlie said: "I just received this random email saying, 'you've probably noticed me and seen me around, I'm really noticeable. My immediate thought was 'who is this big head who thinks he's so noticeable?'

"I messaged him back and asked and he said 'I'm the 6ft 9in guy who walks past your desk every day'. I said 'walk past my desk tomorrow and I'll see if I notice you' and it went from there."

Despite the attention they receive in public, the couple take it all in their stride. Max added he gets comments about his height every day and has been dubbed the BFG and Hodor from the TV series Game of Thrones'

Max said: "Everyone points out the obvious, Charlie is so much smaller than me, but I've never really dated or been attracted to tall people anyway, which is weird because of how tall I am. "My height probably gets mentioned every single day, every time I go out people like to guess how tall I am.

"It's alright, most people are generally pretty nice about it. It's not every day you speak to someone as tall as me, I think I'm in the top one or two per cent in the UK. Little easy things like hoovering gives me a bad back, so it gives me an excuse to get out of it more than anything."
