Good Morning Britain host Ed Balls got more than he bargained for on Tuesday, as he interrupted show guest John Cleese.

The actor and comedian told host Ed to "shut up" leaving him red-faced, as he kept "asking a question and then talking over the answer" as pointed out by his co-presenter Susanna Reid. Susanna joked she wasn't accusing him of anything but GMB guest John agreed with her, as he asked Ed to make it clear what he wanted answering.

While the trio joked about the moment, it certainly caught the hosts off guard as Susanna was visibly shocked and Ed was pretty red-faced while laughing it off. It came about as the pair asked John about his new show with GB News.

Ed was quick to make a jibe about recent news stories regarding the channel and its hosts. As Ed continued to grill John, he ended up telling Ed to "shut up". He had initially discussed his new show, saying: "They made me the best offer anyone has ever made anyone they came..."

Ed then interrupted: "You are the only presenter joining them rather than leaving at the moment," referring to the recent sacking of Laurence Fox and another host on the channel as well as the suspension of Dan Wootton. Fox's departure from the channel came after an initial suspension after he launched a sexist verbal attack against journalist Ava Evans following her opinion on the idea of having a minister for men, which she discussed on BBC Politics Live.

As Ed snuck in a jibe about the news when speaking to John about teaming up with the channel, John asked him to repeat it before telling him: "Well they are clearing out a certain amount which is not a bad idea because they do believe in free speech." But Ed then spoke over him again, saying: "Get the old blood out and the new blood in."

It's then that John quipped back: "Will you shut up?" Ed burst into laughter but was clearly awkward and red-faced, as Susanna gasped before laughing herself. She then defended John by telling Ed: "Yeah well you're asking a question and then talking over the answer."

John agreed: "Well that's right, he's getting another question in. If you'd like to tell me which one you want me to answer..." Ed then quipped back: "It's what us interviewers do you'll find out." Towards the end of the chat, he then discussed the worst thing about interviews being the interruptions.

He said: "People can't get their opening statements out properly before they are interrupted." Susanna joked: "Did you find that on this interview?" to which he laughed and replied: "Oh let me think... you're naughty I like it."
