Andre Onana was guilty of letting in a shot that a schoolboy would have saved against Brentford, according to Garth Crooks.

The Manchester United goalkeeper could not save Mathias Jensen’s tame effort at Old Trafford on Saturday. The Cameroon international let the shot squirm under his grasp as Brentford went 1-0 up. It was the latest in a growing line of mistakes from the £47.2million summer signing.

Thankfully for him, the blunder did not cost United, who came back to win 2-1 thanks to two injury-time goals from Scott McTominay. Nevertheless, the pressure is building on Onana, who also contributed to their 3-2 defeat by Galatasaray with a dreadful hospital pass to Casemiro, allowed Leroy Sane’s shot past him in the 4-3 loss to Bayern Munich and was fortunate to get away with clattering Sasa Kalajdzic on debut against Wolves.

Former Tottenham striker Crooks has torn into Onana by comparing him unfavourably to ex-United keepers. He wrote in his BBC Sport column : “It's hard enough trying to win matches when your goalkeeper is in good form, but when he's making errors almost on a weekly basis it makes life very difficult for all concerned.

“Especially when you've had Peter Schmeichel, Edwin van der Sar and David de Gea keeping goal for you during the past 20 years, it becomes very conspicuous when you have a goalkeeper who is not in their class.

“In fact, Andre Onana is not even on their planet. Since the arrival of the Manchester United keeper, he's been either smashing into centre-forwards, letting the ball slip through his fingers or, as was the case against Brentford, beaten by a shot a schoolboy would have been expected to save.”

Onana has repeatedly been defended by United manager Erik ten Hag, who has made it clear he signed him from Inter Milan to play out from the back. But Schmeichel is so concerned about his form that he saw fit to speak to Onana after the defeats by Bayern Munich and Galatasaray in the Champions League.

HAVE YOUR SAY! Will Andre Onana come good at Manchester United? Comment below.

“I’m trying to speak to him about what it’s like being at Manchester United and why whatever [mistakes] you’ve made, you have to put it in a box and put it to the side,” he told Premier League Productions. “If you make a mistake in the game, it might be a mistake we can see, it might be a mistake that we don’t see.

“But you wait to think about it and analyse it after the game or at night or whatever. You have to be there for the next moment. If you’re not, you’ll make the next mistake. And now he’s upset the whole team. They will now not trust him even more, and my god, it’s not good.”

United now have two weeks off with an international break before fixtures against Premier League strugglers Sheffield United on October 21 and FC Copenhagen in the Champions League on October 24.
