Coronation Street legend Charlie Lawson has finally married his long time girlfriend Debbie Stanley - but it was his on-screen son Simon Gregson who caused the most tears as he delivered an emotional best man’s speech.

Corrie star Charlie, 64, swapped vows in front of a host of celebrity friends and stars as he said “I do” to make Debbie his wife after 22 years of dating. And 49-year-old Simon was part of the ceremony as best man - having been part of Charlie’s life since the 1980s.

Charlie played Jim McDonald on the ITV soap from 1989 through to 2018 while Simon has played his on-screen son, Steve, since 1989 and remains part of the cast. Charlie and Debbie were wed at a glitzy ceremony at Shrigley Hall Hotel & Spa in Macclesfield, Cheshire, with a host of stars watching them swap vows - while Eamonn Holmes officiated over the ceremony.

And after the vows, Steve delivered a heartfelt speech about the happy couple which left no dry eyes in the house. Speaking about Steve’s role, Charlie joked that Steve wasn’t actually his first choice.

The Norther Irish actor joked to OK! Magazine: "My great friend Neil Morrissey couldn’t make the wedding as he’s starring in a West End show, so Simon stepped in to fill the best man position – and I wasn’t remotely disappointed.”

He added: “I’ve known Simon since he was 14, he’s a great friend and did a fantastic job."

And proud bride Debbie revealed that Simon’s touching words left everyone in tears. She told the publication: "Simon’s speech was unbelievable.

“He spends a lot of time at home with us so he knows us really well. He joked about some of the things he was going to say, and I told him, 'No, please don’t say things like that.' But he’s a comedian, so it was really funny. But everyone was crying at the emotional parts, too.”

News of the ceremony broke on Monday morning - but Charlie explained that he and Debbie actually officially married several weeks earlier in Macclesfield Registration Office. He explained that he needed the extra time to round up all his celebrity guest.

He told OK!: “I just wanted to get on with it. Getting actors together is like herding cats. We could have done the wedding two weeks ago, but we had to see who could make it. On the day of the wedding, when we were preparing to fly in the helicopter, I was fed up with waiting – it couldn’t happen quick enough for me."
