Children were among nine fatalities crushed in a rolling stampede at a shopping centre in Uganda on New Year's Eve.

The tragedy happened last night at the Freedom City Mall after huge crowds gathered to honour bringing in January 1, 2023.

Locals keenly watched the clock waiting for it to strike midnight, but as the fireworks whizzed into the air, the crowd erupted into a stampede.

The Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said the force is investigating an "incident of rash and neglect" that "resulted in the deaths of nine people, including several youths.

"It is alleged that the incident occurred at midnight when the event's MC encouraged attendees to go outside and watch the fireworks display.

Cops said five died at the scene while four others died in hospital.

The condition on the other injured victims is yet to be revealed.

The crushed bodies were taken straight to the city's mortuary in Mulago.

Police haven't made any arrests at the time of writing.

The shopping centre is a popular venue for music concerts and new year celebrations.
