Red Dead Redemption PS5 patch 1.03 brings it on par with Xbox version

After causing up a stir with its price just a few months ago, the recent Red Dead Redemption port just got better thanks to a stealthy update.

Red Dead Redemption and its sequel are easily two of the best games ever made (fight me). However, players looking forward to playing it on current-gen consoles were left a tad disappointed after they found out how expensive this year’s port of the original game would be, as well as the revelation that it wouldn’t run at 60fps on PlayStation and Nintendo consoles. Technically a PS5 version of Red Dead Redemption still doesn’t exist, with Rockstar seeking to cover all the bases by releasing a PS4 version that’s forwards compatible.

This version of Red Dead Redemption played on PS4 and PS5 was perfectly fine if a little unspectacular, especially when compared to other PS5 re-dos like launch title Demon’s Souls – a full-on remake. That said, yesterday Rockstar Games saw fit to resolve one of players’ main gripes, releasing a surprise patch that sees the PS4 version now run at 60fps when played on PS5.

The improvement comes courtesy of update 1.03. The Red Dead Redemption patch notes for which were published on the Rockstar Game support site and are as follows:

  • Added an option to enable 60fps when played on PS5 via backward compatibility
  • Added an option to enable subtitles upon first booting the game
  • General bug fixes and improvements

Update 1.03 is available for all owners of Red Dead Redemption on PS4 and PS5 is available to download now. Those playing on Nintendo Switch, meanwhile, are still stuck at playing the open-world cowboy classic at 30fps, with no planned patch in sight. We wouldn’t expect this to change in the near future either, as other big AAA Switch ports like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Dark Souls remain locked at 30fps too.

Don’t look back

I was more than happy to dip back into Red Dead Redemption earlier this year for the first time in a decade, but I elected to do so on Nintendo Switch. Playing on 30fps there was absolutely fine due to the added portability factor. It did always seem strange, though, that the PS4 version couldn’t hit 60fps on PS5 considering the game’s age and the fact that the original Xbox 360 version of Red Dead Redemption enjoys not only 60fps support, but crisp 4K visuals on Xbox Series X|S.

Of course, this is due to how great Xbox handles backwards compatibility when it comes to old games. Because while Microsoft doesn’t plan on supporting this game in future with new additions, their internal team had already performed such a good job at shushing up several key titles from the past – the original Red Dead Redemption being one of them. Playing on PS5 still lacks true 4K support making the Xbox Series X|S still the preferred way to play, yet it’s good to see Rockstar rectify its error on PlayStation.
