Michael Chandler explains his theory over date for Conor McGregor fight

Michael Chandler believes that his fight with Conor McGregor might be getting held up in time for the pair to headline the historic UFC 300 next April.

The duo announced that they were fighting at the start of this year, and even coached against one another on The Ultimate Fighter over the summer. It was expected that a date would be announced during the show's run, or even the night of UFC 292 when the finals took place in Boston, but it never materialised and we appear to be no clearer on what's next.

McGregor told Mirror Fighting last week that the bout was "imminent" and guaranteed that it would be Chandler next, despite calls for the likes of Justin Gaethje and Nate Diaz. And the American has theorised that the 'biggest comeback in all of sport' could be viewed as the perfect headliner for the promotion's marquee show next year.

“My heart of hearts says the biggest fight we’ve seen in a very long time has to go down on the biggest card that the UFC is going to put together since UFC 200, since UFC 100,” Chandler told The MMA Hour. “My heart of hearts, my gut says we might be waiting until UFC 300. Good thing I’ve got a lot of things to keep my busy, and I get an opportunity to train for Conor for a very long time.”

He also believes that his waiting for the bout is the right move, and has enjoyed his time out of action after an hectic schedule since signing with the promotion in 2020. “Obviously there’s been a lot of speculation,” he continued. “The guy is coming off a crazy injury, is he not ready to fight yet? I also completely understand if Conor isn’t in any hurry to come back.

"He’s got more money than he can probably spend, so that urgency for him to fight may not be there, necessarily, so it’s probably got to be right. He needs to feel 100 percent right. ... He’s training, looking like he’s training, looking like he’s doing what everybody accuses him of - partying too much.

"But he’s also out there training as well. It would all be speculation at this point, but the guy is coming off a gruesome injury. This is not an easy injury, and shame on anybody who says he should be back by now. The dude snapped his leg in half. We’ll see. I’m looking forward to that fight.

"I believe the fight is happening. I might be absolutely crushed if it doesn’t, but I have no indication whatsoever that I’m waiting in vain."
