The New England Patriots have moved to re-sign one of their former players who helped win a Super Bowl.

With injuries beginning to hit the Pats squad, it was reported on Wednesday that the team have acquired cornerback JC Jackson from the Los Angeles Chargers. The trade will see Jackson return to the Patriots, where he previously spent four seasons from 2019-21.

According to NFL Network National Insider Ian Rapoport, the trade with see the Patriots and the Chargers swap draft picks in the sixth and seventh rounds in 2025.

Jackson left the Patriots at the end of the 2021 NFL season, where he won one Super Bowl alongside franchise legend Tom Brady. Jackson played 67 games across his time in New England, but could only manage seven in Los Angeles.

The 27-year-old signed a five-year contract worth $82.5 million (£68 million) in 2022 with the Chargers fresh after leaving the Patriots. as a free agent He is under contract until the end of the 2026 NFL season.

A further report in has claimed that the Patriots and the Chargers are still in the process of reworking the remaining salary for the 2023 season for Jackson. The cornerback is set to earn $9.33 million (£7.7 million) this season, with it reported that the Patriots will cover $1.5 million (£1.24 million) while the remaining will be paid by the Chargers as a signing bonus.

Jackson had played two in the first two games of the season for the Chargers however, he was listed as inactive for the Week 3 game against the Minnesota Vikings, and was restored to the gameday roster in Week 4 against the Las Vegas Raiders but did not take part in a single snap.

The move for the Patriots saw head coach Bill Belichick work quickly to replace the injured Christian Gonzalez. The rookie cornerback had been named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month for September thanks to the impressive start to his career.

However, Gonzalez sustained a shoulder injury in the Week Four loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. It has been reported by that the 21-year-old will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2023 season with a torn labrum from a dislocated shoulder and is expected to have surgery. The team have yet to confirm the extent of any injury.
