A crash at a Poundland store has seen a pedestrian rushed to hospital after car ploughed into a shopfront.

Pictures show windows at the store in Longbridge, Birmingham, shattered with glass covering the street after a Ford Focus left the road, hit a person on the pavement and smashed into the building. West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed that its crews were called to reports of a car that had collided with a pedestrian before crashing into a shop.

The damaged red vehicle remains outside the branch as safety barriers were put in place. Images show the inside the shop, with items flung from shelves and products scattered on the floor.

An ambulance service spokesperson told BirminghamLive: "The pedestrian, a woman, was treated for injuries not believed to be serious before being taken to the same hospital." Poundland said it is not aware of any serious injuries to staff members or customers following the alarming incident.

They added it had been a "distressing event" for those involved and a statement read: "We can confirm that just before midday, a car drove into the front of our Longbridge store. While it would be wrong to speculate as to why this occurred, we’re grateful for the prompt attendance of the emergency services who’ve dealt with the incident and ensured those involved were swiftly transported to hospital and we wish them a speedy recovery.

"We’re not aware of any serious injuries to customers or colleagues but this was an unexpected and distressing event for all those involved. It goes without saying we’re offering every support to our colleagues in the store."

Police officers have attended the crash earlier today. Fire crews and paramedics were also called to the incident. West Midlands Ambulance Service said its crews were called to reports of a car that had collided with a pedestrian before crashing into a shop at around 11.41am this morning.

They said: "Two ambulances attended the scene. On arrival we discovered two patients. The driver of the car, a man, was treated for a suspected medical episode before being taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham."
