A fan of Martin Lewis has explained how they made £278 by getting cashback on their spending.

MoneySavingExpert.com reader Sonia used the Chase cashback debit card to earn this extra money on her everyday purchases. The card pays 1% cashback for at least a year.

Writing in the latest MSE weekly email, Martin said: “You NEEDN'T switch bank to get it, so can use it alongside your normal bank, and it only does an ID not credit check when you apply, so is easy to get. It's also the cheapest debit card for spending overseas.”

Explaining her success, Sonia told MSE: “Joined April 2022. Made £278.06 to date plus interest on savings & current account."

Chase customers need to activate the cashback offer within its app to start getting money back on spending. Cashback is added to a rewards pot which can be transferred into another account. To qualify for cashback, you'll need to pay in at least £500 to your Chase current account by the end of the month.

However, you may be able to earn more cashback with a specialist credit card. Martin explained how Amex Preferred Rewards Gold card customers can get 20,000 bonus Amex points if they spend £3,000 or more in the first three months.

This can then be converted into rewards such as £115 in vouchers for places such as M&S and Amazon, or £150 in Nectar points. You also get £120 Deliveroo cashback and free airport passes. However, this card comes with a £160 annual fee from year two.

Separately, the Amex Platinum Everyday card pays 5% cashback, up to £100, in the first three months and “tiered rates” afterwards. This includes 0.5% cashback on spending up to £10,000, then 1% cashback over £10,000.

But as these are both credit cards, you need to make sure you spend responsibly and pay off your balance in full every month to avoid paying interest.

Other ways to earn cashback include websites such as Topcashback.co.uk and Quidco. On either website, simply search for the retailer you want to make a purchase from. Once you've found the retailer, click through from the cashback website then make your purchase as normal.
