Harry Potter star Miriam Margolyes has opened up about her dating history and revealed she hasn't always been faithful to her partners.

The actress, who has had starring roles in Blackadder, Babe and the Harry Potter franchise, revealed that whilst she now believes in monogamy, she hasn't always. The Jewish actress has been with her current partner for more than five decades but revealed she "wasn't always" faithful across her whole dating life. The star is openly gay and proud and has never shied away from her sexuality in interviews.

In one of her latest appearances, she offered some stern advice for fans as well as warning not to "gamble with your happiness".

Speaking on the Rosebud podcast with Gyles Brandreth, Miriam spoke openly about the importance of being faithful to your loved one. Miriam said: "Well, I believe that we should be. I wasn't always. But I am now." Miriam is now happily loved up with partner Heather, who she's been with for 54 years. Miriam came out as a lesbian in 1966, at a time when homosexuality was illegal.

Giles asked the actress how the couple fell in love as he questioned: "What was the first moment you set eyes on your life partner?" Responding, Miriam said: "We arranged to meet at the cinema and it was The Charge of the Light Brigade. And I looked at her and I thought, you're the one. You are. That's what I want for the rest of my life."

She added: "The moment I saw her I had no doubt. And of course, she had not a clue. She was white-haired. That was the key for me." With her many years of relationship experience, Miriam also offered some sage advice for the listeners of the Rosebud podcast as she explained that "you shouldn't gamble with your happiness" when you find the right person. Speaking bluntly she warned: "Don't muck about. It's just not worth it."

In the past, Miriam has made candid confessions and admissions about her life including regretting telling her mum that she was gay as it cost her the relationship. Her parents had longed for their only child to have a conventional Jewish marriage and didn't approve of same-sex relationships, which is why Miriam's brutal honesty was hit with such 'disgust and shock'.

Sharing her remorse with journalist and podcaster Elizabeth Day, Miriam said: "I have profound regrets that I told my mother that I was having a sexual relationship with a woman. It was indulgent of me. It was partly because I told her everything. We always confided in each other. I had nothing hidden from her.

"And when it happened to me, that I was punctured, entered, deflowered... I'm not sure what you'd call it... I was given a good going-over by a woman and it was just fabulous. When you have good sex for the first time you honestly think, 'Whoopee I might do that again'. I shared it with her and it utterly disgusted her and shocked her and her horizon was darkened from that moment."

The TV personality has also said gay people are "not conventional" and she "wouldn't want to be straight for anything".
