Getting fit can be an arduous task, especially if you're not sure what exercise regime works best for you or if you're clueless about how to use equipment in the gym. If you're fortunate enough, turning to a personal trainer for help can do wonders, as they can share their expert knowledge to create personalised routines. So, it's no surprise that countless celebrities work alongside PTs to achieve amazing results.

One PT who is a favourite with the stars is Sarah Lindsay, who has trained everyone from Piers Morgan, Caroline Stanbury, Millie Mackintosh, Christine Lampard, Denise Welch, and Pixie Lott at her Roar Fitness gyms in London and Dubai. The three-time Olympian speed skater has now revealed the five things that she swears by with her clients to help both newbies and more experienced gym bunnies on their way with their fitness journey.

Here, she talks The Mirror through each step - from her must-do weights routine to what she advises her clients to add to their water after a workout to rejuvenate.

Grab the dumbbells

"My advice is to lift heavier if you want to see results," Sarah begins. "I believe weight training can benefit everyone. For many reasons, people train within their comfort zone especially when it comes to weights. To gain maximum benefits from weight training you really need to challenge yourself so try using this as a general rule.

"Form permitting, lift as much weight as you can in the given reps and sets. The last few reps should be almost impossible. For example, it's better to only get to nine rather than 10 as opposed to stopping at 10 knowing you could do five more."

Electrolytes

"Hydration affects how the body functions in so many ways from our training performance to our gut health but it's not all about how much water you drink but how many minerals we absorb - so we need to add them to our water," Sarah advises. "There are lots on the market but as an alternative, you can add a pinch of sugar (or mix a little juice) and a pinch of Celtic sea salt. I’m afraid table salt will not do but you can order online and it will last for months."

Get outside in natural daylight

"The positive energy you can get from the sun can be staggering and not to be underestimated," Sarah stated. "Sun exposure can improve sleep, increase vitamin D, help with low mood and depression, reduce stress - the list goes on and to top it all off it's free. So get outside every day, no hat or sunglasses and soak up that positive energy."

Focus on sleep and recovery

"Rest days and lie-ins are not lazy but essential. If you are training regularly, I think it's best to be flexible with rest days," Sarah suggested. "If you're too tired to achieve the correct intensity in your workouts, then you need to take a rest. Just because you're not training make sure you still eat well.

"Aim for high quality food with plenty of protein in your meals and if you struggle to sleep at night, then you need to work on ways to help improve this. I love a magnesium salt bath before bed once a week followed by covering myself in a magnesium moisturising lotion – I love BetterYou's Magnesium bath flakes and the Magnesium body lotion– they're cost-effective and I sleep like a baby and wake up ready to take on the day when I've used them the night before."

Invest in good trainers

"I always advise my clients to invest in good trainers for running but don't use them in the gym," the expert explained. "Weight training will break down the cushioning in your trainers that you need to protect your joints when jogging. In the gym opt for a harder soul that won't absorb the force that you are trying to create against the weight."
