Si King of the Hairy Bikers has shared his heartbroken reaction after the famous Sycamore Gap tree was brutally cut down, admitting he's 'lost for words' over its sudden felling.

The landmark Sycamore Gap beside Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland National Park was cut down on Wednesday night in an apparent act of vandalism, bring its centuries-old lifespan to a brutal end.

A 16-year-old boy has since been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and said to be cooperating with police. Officials at the park believe that the tree, which was also called the Robin Hood's Tree after appearing in the 1991 Kevin Costner film, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, was "deliberately felled." The incident has caused "shock, sadness and anger" to ripple toward the local community and further afield, with many people taking to the Internet to express their huge sadness over the alleged act of vandalism.

Hairy Bikers' Si King has joined a number of celebrities who have addressed the felling, condemning the person who cut down the tree in an emotional video on Twitter.

"I've just been made aware that we've lost the Sycamore Gap," the 56-year-old said, looking visibly distraught by the news. "Somebody has felled it, apparently. I hope whoever has done that has a conscience because you've just murdered a sentinel of time and elemental spirit of Northumberland and I hope you feel very good about yourself for whatever warped reason you've done it."

The area of the felled tree has been closed off to the public while park authorities "work with our partners to identify what has happened and to make the site safe" once again.
