Ed Sheeran's latest musical release hints at possible marriage woes and past troubles during his relationship with wife Cherry Seaborn.

In one song on the award-winning singer's new album, Ed even goes as far to hint his wife "may have called time on" their romance at one point. The dad-of-two, 32, also admits to being "destructive right now" when singing one song centred around an imploding relationship.

Ed and his childhood friend and former secondary school classmate Cherry, 31, started dating in July 2015, with their engagement announced in January 2018. The happy couple went on to tie the knot in 2019 and have gone on to welcome two children into the world together, daughters Jupiter, 15 months, and Lyra, two.

Ed's new album Autumn Variations, released today [September 29], features a track titled Punchline, which includes the lyrics: "I can’t help but be destructive right now. It’s been weeks since I saw your outline. In my room is a silence so loud. This is what losing hope might sound like."

During the emotional chorus, Ed goes on to sing: "I can’t help it but I love you so. I can’t take this letting go. I still feel like we could work it out or something. All I am is only flesh and bone. Why’s your heart so freezing cold?"

In another emotional track, Ed sings about a "bumpy road' but stresses during the song that "it is not the end of our lives." He croons: "This is not the end of our lives, this is just a bump in the ride. I know that it’ll be alright." The track The Day I Was Born sees Ed sing the lyrics: "I broke apart from my lover a couple months ago, if they were here then I guess I wouldn’t be alone."

It's not clear if Ed is singing about his own lived experiences on his new album. The solo artist often works with fellow songwriters when creating new material, including a longstanding professional relationship with Courtney Cox's partner, Snow Patrol star Johnny McDaid.

Ed and Cherry have endured a tough few years recently, with the singer grieving the loss of one of his best friends Jamal Edwards and Cherry developing a tumour with "no route to treatment until after the birth" while pregnant with their second child. At the time, Ed was dealing with multiple copyright legal issues.

"I got diagnosed with cancer at the start of the year which was a massive s***ter," Cherry recalled when appearing on her husband's new Disney+ docu-series, 'Ed Sheeran: The Sum of it All' earlier this year. "It made me massively reflect on our mortality. I would never agree to do anything like this, but it made me think, 'Oh if I died, what's people's perception of me? What do you leave behind?'"

Speaking in the same documentary series, Ed admitted: "Music's always been like therapy to me. It was a way to get my thoughts and feelings down as a kid, and it works. It really works."
