Man Utd's astonishing run of cup draws as Red Devils land 12th straight home tie

Erik ten Hag's Manchester United have been handed a 12th successive home cup draw, with Newcastle their upcoming opponents in the fourth round.

United made short work of Crystal Palace in their third round tie, with Alejandro Garnacho, Casemiro and Anthony Martial all netting in a 3-0 victory. Newcastle were made to work a little harder to progress, with Alexander Isak scoring the only goal of the game as they eliminated 2021 winners Manchester City at St James' Park.

The fourth-round meeting with Newcastle will provide the visitors with the opportunity to avenge their defeat in last season's final, when first-half goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford gave United the trophy. More remarkably, though, it means the Red Devils still haven't been drawn away from home in a domestic cup since March 2021.

Last season's run to Carabao Cup glory came off the back of three home ties either side of the World Cup break. Aston Villa were despatched 4-2 in November, with Burnley and Charlton following suit as Ten Hag's team secured back-to-back clean sheets.

United also reached the FA Cup final last term, eventually losing to Manchester City. A quartet of 3-1 home victories set them on their way before Brighton were beaten on penalties in the semi-final at Wembley.

The 2021-22 season also only featured home cup ties, though United weren't able to go as far under Old Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick. Their last away cup tie came the previous season, when Solskjaer's team lost 3-1 to eventual FA Cup winners Leicester in the quarter-finals of the competition.

"We dominated the game, we had some good attacks, control in possession and scored great goals,” Ten Hag said after the victory over Palace. “We know we're not in the position we want to be, so we have to build, catch up and work on the process and the results. Don’t get too far ahead. The next game is the most important

“The mood is always good but of course, when you're not winning at United, there is disappointment and frustration, but the togetherness is always there.”

United will face Palace again in their next league game, one of six matches to come before their EFL Cup fourth round tie. They also have league meetings with Brentford, Sheffield United and Manchester City on the horizon, as well as Champions League match-ups against Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen.
