Poundland has announced it will reopen ten former Wilko shops this weekend.

The discount retailer is rebranding each store as Poundland, after it agreed to take on the leases of up to 71 Wilko shops. Customers will be able to find a range of Poundland favourites in store, including clothing, alongside any existing Wilko clearance items.

Poundland, which has over 800 stores in the UK, intends to carry out a full makeover of these shops in 2024. Poundland retail director Darren Kay said: “We’re pleased to be able to re-open so quickly – not least because our ambition is to provide job opportunities for former Wilko colleagues.

“Of course, we’re not yet in a position to offer our fullest ranges in these stores, but we know customers will appreciate a shop that’s open, trading and employing colleagues to one that’s got its shutters closed. We’d encourage customers old and new to come and say hello to their new Poundland team from this coming Saturday in each of these 10 locations.”

Poundland had previously said it will give priority to Wilko workers for new roles in its stores. Rival discounter B&M has agreed to buy up to 51 store and is also expected to rebrand these sites. The Range has agreed to buy the Wilko brand, website and intellectual property, which means it can now sell Wilko products within its own stores.

Wilko collapsed into administration last month, putting more than 400 stores and 12,500 jobs at risk. Administrators at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) were unable to find a buyer for the whole business, meaning all stores will close by October 8.
