Manchester United are plotting a shock January transfer for ex-Arsenal forward Serge Gnabry in a bid to tackle their issues in wide areas.

Manager Erik ten Hag is believed to be assessing the options available in the market ahead of the January window. According to reports, the Dutchman has identified the ex-Gunner as a player he may try and entice to Old Trafford, which would undoubtedly damage Gnabry's relations with his old friends at the Emirates.

United's attack is looking particularly blunt at the moment, especially out on the flanks given Ten Hag is currently unable to call upon Antony and Jadon Sancho. The former has taken a leave of absence after allegations of domestic abuse were made against him in Brazil, while the latter has been exiled from the fold due to a fall-out with the manager.

As a result, attentions have turned to Gnabry and Spanish publication Nacional, via the Daily Mail, claim that United are aiming to lure the Germany international away from Bayern Munich at the turn of the year. It is a move that would certainly frustrate Arsenal fans, despite the fact that the 28-year-old only made 18 appearances for the club after progressing through the youth ranks.

When analysing his time in English football, Gnabry is arguably best remembered for his dismal loan spell with West Brom where he made just three appearances and was written off by then-Baggies boss Tony Pulis.

He joined Werder Bremen in 2016 and after one stellar season at the Weser Stadium joined German giants Bayern Munich, where he has remained ever since. It was at the Allianz Arena where Gnabry's performances became too difficult for the Germany national team to ignore and he established himself as a vital player for club and country.

United fans are familiar with Gnabry's talent, with the wide forward getting on the scoresheet against the Red Devils during the recent meeting between the two teams in the Champions League group stage that saw Bayern run out 4-3 winners.

For all of United's interest, those at the top of the Old Trafford hierarchy will know that Gnarby is unlikely to come cheap. He is contracted to Bayern until the summer of 2026 and is also admired by Spanish titans Real Madrid, who could look to beat United to his signature.

A winger is high on Ten Hag's transfer wishlist given it looks unlikely that either of Antony or Sancho will be available anytime soon. In the case of Sancho, the United boss is relucant to comment further on the situation.

Asked about the 23-year-old prior to Tuesday night's Carabao Cup win over Crystal Palace, Ten Hag kept his cards close to his chest and simply replied: “I will not comment on players who are not available.”

The pair have suffered a complete breakdown in their relationship after Ten Hag went public with his disappointment over the way Sancho has trained, to which the former Borrusia Dortmund man claimed he was a being targeted as a 'scapegoat'. It is unlikely that the England ace returns to the first-team fold until he apologises to his manager.
